| Remove/install | ||
1 | Remove hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements
2 | Remove spark plugs | ||
3 | Tension timing chain by hand and turn engine at the crankshaft in its direction of rotation until the piston of the cylinder to be machined is at top dead center | The timing chain must not jam in the process.
For top dead center seeking device see cylinder leakage tester | Cylinder leakage tester (pressure loss)
4 | Connect cylinder leakage tester to respective cylinder | Cylinder leakage tester (pressure loss)
| |||
5 | Pressurize compression chamber to about 5 bar | If crankshaft turns, the retaining lock for crankshaft/starter ring gear must be installed. See:
Remove/install retaining lock for crankshaft/starter ring gear
6 | Mount grid with joint bearing (1) on cylinder head
7 | Hook detent depressor for thrust piece (2) on grid with a joint bearing (1) and place depressor (3) on upper valve spring retainer (6) vertically
| |||
8 | Press valve spring (7) together using the detent depressor for thrust piece (2), remove valve keepers (5) using a magnetic finger (4) and detension valve spring (7) again | When pressing together valve spring (7) ensure that the depressor (3) does not slip to avoid damaging the surface of the valve stem. In order to avoid damage to the valve or piston, do not place valve on the piston crown.
| |||
| |||
| |||
9 | Remove upper valve spring retainer (6), valve spring (7) and lower valve spring retainer (8)
10 | Detach valve stem seal (9) | Installation: Replace valve stem seals (9).
| |||
| |||
| Checking | ||
11 | Check surface of valve stem for damage | Replace valves if the stem surface is rough, or if there is ridging. See:
Remove/install valves
12 | Check upper valve spring retainer (6) and lower valve spring retainer (8) for wear or damage | In case of wear or damage, replace upper valve spring retainer (6) and lower valve spring retainer (8).
13 | Removal of further valve springs (7) or valve stem seals (9) is to be conducted in the same way | If retaining lock for crankshaft/starter ring gear was installed, it must be removed before turning the crankshaft any further. See:
Remove/install retaining lock for crankshaft/starter ring gear
14 | Install in the reverse order
15 | Check engine oil level, correct if necessary | Do not check engine oil level until approx. 2 min after switching off the engine.
The engine oil level must not be above the maximum mark. This can lead to engine damage. The fill level markings on the oil dipstick are designed for an engine oil temperature of about 80 °C. Do not top up with any more oil for engine oil temperatures below this when filling the prescribed oil quantity. |
