Checking

1

Check engine oil level, correct if necessary

Check the engine oil level two minutes after switching off the engine.

The engine oil level must not be above the maximum mark. This can lead to engine damage.

The fill level markings on the oil dipstick are designed for an engine oil temperature of about 80 °C. Do not top up with any more oil for engine oil temperatures below this when filling the prescribed oil quantity.

Danger!

Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running

Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

2

Bring the engine to normal operating temperature and switch it off

Coolant temperature 60 to 80 °C.

3

Remove the right cylinder head cover

AR01.20-D-5012US

4

Remove left cylinder head cover

AR01.20-D-5013US

5

Turn the engine at the vibration damper of the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation until the cam of the camshaft of the compensation element to be checked is on the base circle

Compensation elements not lying on the base circle of the cam must be replaced.

6

Press the compensation element by pushing down (arrow) the roller-type cam follower using a suitable drift (1)

Never use a steel tool to avoid damaging the surfaces.

The compensating element should be pressed together very slowly with the normal force of the hand. Do not apply strong pressure.

If a compensation element moves down too much as compared to the others, install a new valve clearance compensating element.
