On vehicles as of 1.9.03, all audio data and voice signals are transmitted via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).
On vehicles as of 1.9.03, the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) is also installed as an interface between the Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B) and the MOST. The audio signals are then sent to the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) and output via the vehicle speakers.
The telephone system can be operated directly at the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) in combination with the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1) or via voice command with code (813) Voice control system (VCS). The audio source is automatically muted during a telephone call.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In conjunction with COMAND it is possible to have the following various telephone systems:
Variant 1
Only portable CTEL (A34/6) with code (854) MB standard CTEL in combination with the portable CTEL D2B interface (A59/1)
Variant 2
with CODE (853) MB standard telephone
D2B telephone transmitter/receiver (A35/13) in combination with the telephone handset (A34)
Variant 3
With code (855) TELE AID, as with variant 2, however with the D2B telephone and TELE AID transmitter/receiver (A35/17), the telephone handset (A34), SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3), and self-diagnosis capable
Variant 4 (no longer installed, status as of 5/99)
As with variant 2 or 3, however, additionally optional portable CTEL (A34/6) in combination with the portable CTEL D2B interface (A59/1) with code (318) Portable CTEL in addition to telephone in center console
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Variant 5
The portable CTEL (A34/6) is merely used as a number memory. When the portable CTEL (A34/6) is inserted, it is not possible to make phone calls.
For all variants, the transmission of the control signals and desired signals (e.g. speaker signals with activated hands-free system) takes place via the Digital Data Bus (D2B). The D2B telephone transmitter/receiver (A35/13) and the D2B telephone and TELE AID transmitter/receiver (A35/17) are equipped with their own integrated interface to the D2B. The portable CTEL (A34/6) needs the telephone interface (A34/4) as an interface to the D2B.
The telephone radio signals for model 220 are transmitted and received via the telephone antenna (A2/49a1), for model 215 via the telephone antenna (A2/22). The display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) shows the reception field strength in 5 grades (only when the telephone is operational).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following telephone functions (status until 31.5.01):
Automatic disabling of telephone card when the Personal Identification Number is entered incorrectly 3 times.
An emergency call can always be placed.
Direct dialing of the subscriber's number via the shaft encoder or the figures keyboard, display of the name of the person called (in the event that the entered number is known).
Speed dialing by dialing the first 10 memory locations with only one key, dialing all further memory locations by entering the 3-digit memory location number.
Sorting option of the memory locations based on memory location number, names (alphabetic) or the 10 numbers last dialed.
Display of the subscriber number during an incoming call (provided that the number is also transmitted by radio signal), display of caller name (if the number is known).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The new generation of telephones (as of 1.6.00) will be capable of rendering additional services:
Reading, erasing SMS
Short Message Service (SMS) messages can be received.
Call waiting
During a call, the user is informed optically and acoustically of incoming calls.
Toggling
Call brokered between two lines. The party called can connect the calling party and thus terminate the call.
The "Call waiting" and "Toggling" functions have to be activated by the relevant service provider. The portable CTEL generations (Nokia, as of modification year 1.6.00) is dual band-capable, in other words the portable CTEL (A34/6) can be used in the D-network and in the E-network.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SMS text messages (additional features as of 1.6.01)
With the D2B (Digital Data Bus), the telephone interface (A34/4) is a prerequisite for the following additional features:
Create SMS
Edit SMS
Creating and editing SMS messages is only possible if SMS messages are present in the buffer. The characters can be entered in the "Speller" or with the 12-key keypad (analog to the portable CTEL). The letters on the number block are operational. These functions are also used for sending SMS messages; a receiver can be specified or selected from the telephone book.
Switching back on again after switching off controlled or uncontrolled
After switching back on, the basic telephone display appears. Starting from the basic mask, it is possible to display the SMS main menu via the "SMS" menu item. In the SMS main, menu select "edit SMS" and continue the editing process in the "Speller".
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Switch-on properties as of 1.9.02
The COMAND telephone system is not operational until it has been activated via the D2B (wake-up).
Run-on time as of 1.9.02
The run-on time of the telephone system can be adjusted with the portable CTEL (A34/6) or the telephone handset (A34). When a call comes in during the run-on time, the COMAND system is activated.
As of 1.9.02, the notebook of the telephone is always available.
