Remove

Remove heat exchanger.

Remove timing case cover.

Adjust camshafts to preadjustment.

 For this purpose, turn crankshaft (8) in direction of engine rotation using open-end wrench.
Align groove (10) at crankshaft (8) with bore (11) at crankcase (9).

Remove screw plug (12) from crankcase (9).

Preparatory tasks

Screw drift into bore at crankcase (9).

Turn engine at crankshaft (8) opposite direction of engine rotation until crankshaft (8) is in contact with drift.

Adjust

Insert suitable locking drift (Ø 4 mm) into bore (1) and press together spring (2) of intake camshaft gear (3).


Via use of locking drift, intake camshaft gear (3) is locked. It must only be removed and installed in this condition. Lock must not be removed during this time.
Otherwise, intake camshaft gear (3) can subsequently be damaged when engine is running.

 The gear backlash play compensation is relaxed in this way.

Engage the chain tensioner.

 Do not remove chain tensioner.

Loosen screws (4).

Insert wedge of the adjustment tool into the grooves (5).

Align bore with attached spacer sleeve on the adjusting tool with the bore (6) on the cylinder head cover.

 For this purpose, turn exhaust camshaft with  adjustment tool.

Turn intake camshaft gearwheel (3) until the pins of the adjustment tool engage in the bores (7) on the intake camshaft gearwheel (3).

Fix adjusting tool in place.

 For this purpose, screw screw into bore (6).

Release chain tensioner.

Replace screws (4) in sequence.

Remove locking drift from bore (1).

Remove adjustment tool.

 For this purpose, unscrew bolt from bore (6).

Check basic position of camshafts.

 Crank engine at crankshaft in direction of engine rotation.

If the adjusting tool cannot be attached,



Repeat the whole adjustment procedure again.

Remove drift.

If drift was screwed in.

Install

Screw screw plug (12) into crankcase (9).
