Remove timing case cover

Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing coolant.

Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90°C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.

Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

Attach adapter and testing unit to expansion reservoir



Pressurize cooling system at testing unit with compressed air

 Test pressure approx. 1.2 bar.

Check rear screw plug (1) on cylinder crankcase for leaktightness

Engine 541 up to engine end no. 062557 and engine 542 up to engine end no. 065339

 If a leak is found, check the screw plug is fitted correctly, replace sealing ring (2) if necessary and tighten screw plug, for this purpose: 

Remove camshaft

Check core plug (3) in cylinder crankcase for leaktightness

Engine 541 from engine end no. 062558 and engine 542 from engine end no. 065340

 If leaks are present 

Replace core plug in crankcase

Disconnect adapter and testing unit at expansion reservoir

 Release pressure.

Attach cap to expansion reservoir

Install timing case cover

Check coolant level


