05-7601 Replacing timing chain
Preceding work: Glow plugs removed (15-4111). Chain tensioner removed (05-7800). Radiator removed (20-3865). | Viscous fan clutch removed (20-5630). Cylinder head cover removed. |

Replacing

1 Unscrew hexagon bolts (7) and take off oil filler neck (6) together with seal (5).
2 Examine camshaft sprocket for scoring and pitting.
3 Cover over chain box with cleaning cloth and grind off both chain pins (arrows) at a chain link (1) of the timing chain (2).
Ensure that the ends of the timing chain do not drop into the chain box.
4 Remove outer plate (4) and chain link (1).
5 Attach new timing chain (arrow) with a chain link (1) to the old timing chain (2).
The timing chains must remain meshed when turning the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
6 Slowly turn crankshaft in direction of rotation of engine. Pull out evenly the end of the old timing chain as it becomes free, and as the new timing chain is drawn in.
7 Detach old timing chain and secure the ends of the new timing chain (2) to the camshaft sprocket (3) with wire (arrows).
8 Insert new chain link (1) into the timing chain (2) from the rear.
9 Insert new outer plate (4) into the fitting tool (8) (arrow). The outer plate (4) is held by a magnet.

10 Place fitting tool (8) onto the chain link and press outer plate on as far as the stop.

11 Switch over die (9) of the fitting tool (8).

12 Place fitting tool (8) onto the chain link and rivet the chain pins individually.
Tightening torque of the spindle approx.
30 - 35 Nm.

13 Check rivet of chain pins, re-rivet if necessary.
14 Take off wire.
15 Set engine to ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
In this position the markings on camshaft/
camshaft bearing cap (arrows) must also be aligned.
If the markings are not aligned, the timing chain must be switched over and the start of delivery of the injection pump set (07.1-8300).
16 Install oil filler neck (6) with new seal,
10 Nm.
