Audio/COMAND function, general

The audio equipment is the center control panel for the entertainment and communications systems integrated in the vehicle.

On vehicles with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer), with CODE 511 (Audio 50 APS with DVD changer), with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer) or with CODE 528 (COMAND incl. DVD changer), the CD/DVD drive of the audio equipment is designed as a changer, i.e. a choice can be made between up to six CDs or DVDs.

The audio equipment contains the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:

Disk changer function (with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer), with CODE 511 (Audio 50 APS with DVD changer), with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer) or with CODE 528 (COMAND incl. DVD changer))

Video mode function (with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer), with CODE 527 (COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) or with CODE 528 (COMAND incl. DVD changer))

TV mode function (with CODE 865 (TV tuner))

On model 204.9 up to 31.05.2012, the rear entertainment function is available (with CODE 864 (Rear entertainment system)); this is described in a separate document. On model 204.9 as of 01.06.2012, a preinstallation is available instead (with CODE 866 (Rear entertainment preinstallation)), which consists of lines for circuit 15 and circuit 31 in the front seat backrests.

On model 204.0/2/3 with CODE 255 (AMG Performance Media), the AMG Performance Media function is available; this is described in a separate document.

The audio equipment communicates with the following control units via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) (except on vehicles with CODE 523 (MB Audio 20 radio) and except CODE 494 (USA version)):

Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with CODE 537 (Digital radio))

SDAR tuner/high definition tuner control unit (N87/8) (with CODE 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio), with COMAND controller unit (A40/3) as of 01.06.2009 up to 31.05.2010)

Satellite Digital Audio Radio (SDAR) control unit (N87/5) (with CODE 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio), except with COMAND controller unit as of 01.06.2009 up to 31.05.2010)

TV digital tuner (A90/3) (with CODE 865 (TV tuner))

Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with CODE 810 (Sound system))

The displays and menu displays for the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are generated in the audio equipment (except for navigation mode with CODE 509 (Navigation box) and for the AMG Performance Media function (with CODE 255 (AMG Performance Media))). The display and the menu display for navigation with CODE 509 (Navigation box) are not generated in the audio equipment but in the navigation module (A2/30) itself, and differ from the standard display. Display and menu display for the AMG Performance Media function are generated by the AMG Performance Media control unit (N125/3) and forwarded to the Audio/COMAND display.

The audio equipment acts as a gateway. It routes the signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the MOST and thus forms the communications interface.
