Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and undeburred vehicle parts.

Deburr replacement panels.

Mark position of threaded rings (2, 3) relative to housing (6)

 Only required, if the tapered roller bearings (5, 8) on the differential cage and on the ring gear are not replaced.

Detach locking plates (1) of threaded rings (2, 3)

Loosen threaded rings (2, 3)



Unscrew bolts (7).

Remove bearing cover (4)

 If necessary, loosen the bearing cap (4) by gentle blows with a plastic hammer.

Remove threaded ring (2)

 Lift up the ring gear slightly in the process.

Remove outer bearing shell of tapered roller bearing (5)

 Lift up the ring gear slightly in the process.

The roller cage of the tapered roller bearing (5) must not contact the housing (6) in order to avoid damage to the tapered roller bearing (5).

Remove crown wheel with differential



Check

Check ring gear and drive pinion

 If defects on the ring gear or drive pinion are established, the complete ring gear and pinion should be replaced.

Check tapered roller bearing (5) for wear

 If the tapered roller bearing (5) is worn:



Detach tapered roller bearing (5) from ring gear

Check tapered roller bearing (8) for wear

 If the tapered roller bearing (8) is worn:



Detach tapered roller bearing (8) from differential cage

Install

Install crown wheel with differential

The roller cage of the tapered roller bearing (5) must not contact the housing (6) in order to avoid damage to the tapered roller bearing (5).

 All bearing points and moving parts must be lubricated with hypoid transmission oil SAE 90 during installation.



Install outer bearing shell of tapered roller bearing (5)

 Lift up the ring gear slightly in the process.

Install threaded ring (2)

 Lay threaded ring (2) in the half shell on the housing side and turn against the bearing outer race up to zero clearance contact. Lift up the ring gear slightly in the process. There must be adequate backlash present.

Attach bearing cover (4)

Screw in screws (7)

 Only tighten the bolts (7) with the 1st stage tightening torque.



Screw in threaded rings (2, 3)

 Screw in the threaded rings (2, 3) until the threaded rings (2, 3) abut the tapered roller bearings (5, 8) Turn the ring gear in the process and apply gentle blows with a plastic mallet to the housing (6) or bearing cap (4). This centers the tapered roller bearing (5, 8).



Position the threaded rings (2, 3) on the markings applied to step 2

 Only carry out when the tapered roller bearings (5, 8) are not replaced. This guarantees the pre-adjustment of the gear backlash and the preload of the tapered roller bearings (5, 8).



Tighten screws (7)

 Tighten the bolts (7) by the specified rotation angle.


