1 To check the wear pattern, coat two teeth 180 degrees apart on the crown wheel with blue ink.
2 Brake crown wheel using holding device (01).
3 Spin the drive pinion forward and back.
The following contact patterns may occur on the crown wheel under load
(crown wheel braked)

A Correct tooth contact
Such an ideal contact pattern is rarely obtained in practice. However it is important that the contact pattern is towards the base of the tooth (towards the center of the crown wheel) both with and without load.
The contact pattern must not extend to the outside edge of the tooth at any point.

B Contact at tip of tooth (unacceptable)
Measures:
Slightly reduce the installation distance (basic dimension) of the drive pinion while slightly increasing the installation distance of the crown wheel.
The crown wheel teeth mesh slightly less deep in the teeth of the drive pinion and the gear backlash is maintained.

C Contact at base of tooth (unacceptable)
Measures:
Slightly increase the installation distance (basic dimension) of the drive pinion while slightly reducing the installation distance of the crown wheel.
The crown wheel teeth mesh slightly deeper in the teeth of the drive pinion and the gear backlash is maintained.
