| Removing | ||
Danger! | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by pinching or crushing when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension | Use only approved tensioning devices; shield off hazard area if necessary.
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | All models | |
1 | Bleed combination cylinder (12) | Operate parking brake so that the combination cylinder (12) is operated by spring force and bled at the same time .
2 | Bleeding the air suspension system | Ensure that the air spring bellows and reservoir are unpressurized.
3 | Lift/jack up vehicle | The vehicle must be secured with jack stands, see operator's manual.
4 | Remove wheel-engaging lift | Wheel-engaging lift, electric-mechanical
5 | Remove wheels | ||
6 | Unhook linkage (1) of level control (2) | On both sides.
7 | Disconnect electrical connectors (3) of ABS sensors
8 | Disconnect electrical connectors at connectors of brake wear indicators (4) | To do this, in each case remove two bolts and disconnect electrical lines at connectors of brake wear indicator (4).
9 | Disconnect electrical connector on parking brake sensor (5)
10 | Detach electrical lines from rear axle (7) | Electrical lines of ABS sensors, brake wear indicators and parking brake sensor (5).
11 | Lift rear axle (7) | In order to reduce the stress at the anti-sway bar (6), to raise the rear axle (7) to the normal level. This facilitates the removal of the rear axle (7).
12 | Detach air reservoir (8) | Do not detach compressed air lines. Fasten air reservoir (8) to vehicle frame with tensioning straps.
13 | Detach air line (9) at quick-release valve (10) of parking brake | Seal the connections.
14 | Detach air lines (11) at combination cylinders (12) | Mark air lines (11) relative to the connectors on the combination cylinders (12) in order to avoid a malfunction of the brake system.
The air lines (11) must be unpressurized. Seal connections.
15 | Detach air line (13) at parking brake bleed valve (14) | The parking brake bleed valve (14) is installed on the right of the vehicle frame above the rear axle (7). Seal connections.
16 | Remove propeller shaft (15) | Only the operation steps must be carried out which are required for the disassembly of the propeller shaft (15) at the rear axle (7). Tie up propeller shaft (15) and secure the parts to prevent them from sliding apart.
17 | Loosen bolts (16) from trailing arm (17) | Do not loosen bolts (16) with an impact wrench, the locking splines of the stop nuts might destroy the bolts (16).
Only detach the trailing arm (17) from the frame.
18 | Detach diagonal control arm (18) | Only detach diagonal control arm (18) at the rear axle (7). Mark location of existing spacer rings.
19 | Remove stabilizer (6) from connecting rods (19)
20 | Unscrew nuts of damper (20) | Screw on nuts again after lowering the rear axle (7) due to risk of mixing up.
21 | Remove bolts (16) of trailing arms (17) | If necessary lower rear axle (7) further until there is an adequate gap.
22 | Detach differential vent hose (21) on diagonal control arm (18) | Separate cable tie.
23 | Lower rear axle (7) | Secure rear axle (7) to prevent it from tilting.
24 | Detach spring support from rear axle (7)
| Clean | ||
25 | Clean contact surfaces of trailing arm (17) and diagonal link (18) | Remove contaminants due to underfloor protection.
| Install | ||
26 | Install spring support at rear axle (7) | Observe U-bolt tightening instructions:
Remove/install rear axle spring bracket
27 | Lift rear axle (7) | Lift carefully until the air spring bellows support (24) seat correctly in the air spring bellows (25). Observe installation position of trailing arms (17) and diagonal link (18).
28 | Insert bolts (16) into the trailing arms (17) | Subsequent insertion when the rear axle is raised (7) is no longer possible due to a shortage of space.
29 | Install damper (20) | Insert threaded pin of damper (20) in the air spring bellows carrier (24).
30 | Install nuts of damper (20)
| |||
31 | Raise rear axle (7) up to normal level | Facilitates installation of rear axle (7) and prevents distortions.
32 | Tighten bolts (16) of trailing arms (17)
| |||
33 | Install diagonal control arm (18) | Install existing and marked spacer rings in the same position again.
34 | Install anti-sway bar (6) at the link rods (19) | Only put in bolts (22) by hand.
35 | Install propeller shaft (15) | Only the operation steps must be carried out which are required for the assembly of the propeller shaft (15) at the rear axle (7).
36 | Route electrical lines to the rear axle (7) | Electrical lines of ABS sensors, brake wear indicators and parking brake sensor (5). Pay attention to correct routing of electrical lines and fasten to the rear axle (7) with new cable ties.
37 | Tighten bolts (22) of anti-sway bar (6) at the link rods (19)
| |||
| |||
38 | Tighten bolts (23) of diagonal control arm (18)
| |||
39 | Connect air line (11) to the combination cylinders (12) | Observe markings applied to the air lines (11) at the connectors to combination cylinder (12) in order to avoid a malfunction to the brake system.
40 | Lower the rear axle (7)
41 | Connect electrical connectors (3) of ABS sensors
42 | Connect electrical connectors to the connectors of the brake wear indicator (4)
43 | Connect electrical connector to parking brake sensor (5)
44 | Fasten differential vent hose (21) to diagonal control arm (18) | Use new cable ties.
45 | Install air line (9) at quick-release valve (10) of parking brake
46 | Install air reservoir (8) | When removing, rearrange lines routed to one side and fasten with new cable ties.
47 | Install air line (13) at parking brake bleed valve (14)
48 | Fit wheels | ||
49 | Position wheel grippers under the wheels | Wheel-engaging lift, electric-mechanical
