Cleanliness must be ensured whenever work is carried out on the automatic transmission. Drain oil when warm.

Apply parking brake and shift transmission to "N" position

Remove encapsulation below transmission

Clean the area around the oil drain screw for transmission oil pan (1)

Unscrew oil drain screw for transmission oil pan (1)

Unscrew oil drain screw for torque converter (2)

 The oil drain screw for torque converter (2) is located above the oil drain screw for transmission oil pan (1).

Allow oil to drain completely.

Screw in oil drain screw for torque converter (2)



 Clean oil drain screw for torque converter (2) and replace seal rings

Screw in oil drain screw of transmission oil pan (1)



 Clean oil drain screw of transmission oil pan (1) and replace seal rings.

Clean area around oil drain screw (3) for oil filter

 On transmission 721.440/460 the transmission oil filter is integrated in the transmission oil pan.

Detach oil filter cover (4)

Replacing oil filter

 Remove oil filter element and insert new filter.

Attach oil filter cover



Clean oil filter cover. Check sealing ring, inspect and replace, if necessary.

 Clean oil drain screw and replace sealing ring.

Insert access cover with new gasket

Open maintenance flap covering transmission

Open cap (5)

Insert hose of funnel (7) into opening of oil filler tube



Initially pour in approx. 20 l of oil



Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running

Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Start engine

Actuate service brake and engage all selector lever positions in sequence

Leave selector lever engaged at each position for a few seconds. Then shift the transmission back to position "N".

Turn off engine

Withdraw dipstick (8) from the guide tube.

 Wipe oil dipstick with a lint-free cloth (ideally leather).



Check oil level

 If transmission is cold (approx. 20-30 °C) the oil level must be 20 mm above the maximum marking.

Start engine and warm transmission up to operating temperature.

When the engine is idling, the oil level of the warm transmission (approx. 80 °C) must be at the maximum marking.

Slowly pour in remaining oil until specified oil level is indicated on oil dipstick

It is essential to extract excess transmission oil which has been poured in, with the hand pump, or to drain it at the oil drain screw.
When extracting transmission oil, the hose and the hand pump must be spotlessly clean.



Insert oil dipstick and screw on cap

Close maintenance flap above transmission

Turn off engine



Check

Inspect drain plugs and access cover for leaks

Install encapsulation below transmission
