Danger | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
1 | Place the vehicle on a suitable lift | The most convenient and safe way to work under this vehicle is using a lift with adequate capacity.
Subsequently, to remove and install the suspension components of each axle, the vehicle should be supported by the frame, both at the front and at the rear, on four or six large trestles.
2 | Disconnect the negative battery cable or turn off the main switch | For vehicles equipped with electronic engines, always observe the recommendations regarding the care with the vehicle electronics.
3 | If necessary, remove the wheels |
| |
Where a suitable lift is used, remove the wheels is not necessary.
4 | De-pressurize the rear pneumatic bellows on the drive shaft. If a rear driven axle is provided, also de-pressurize the bellows thereof | Excess stroke of the dampers can lead to serious damage thereto.
This procedure may make moving the rear driving axle easier using a lift, also facilitating the release of the dampers from the anchors.
5 | Remove the self-locking nuts (3) from upper fixing, and remove cup washers with integrated hexagon and oblong hole (4) and the upper rubber mount (5) | To prevent the damper rods from rotating, you should hold the u-cup (4) using a spanner from the hex part, while loosening the self-locking nut (3).
Pay attention to the correct mounting position of the u-cups and convex washers.
6 | At bottom fixing, hold the cup washer with integrated hexagon and oblong hole (13) by the hexagon and remove the self-locking nut (14), the cup washer with integrated hexagon and oblong hole 13) and the bottom rubber mount (12)
7 | Remove shock absorber and remove the bottom rubber mount (7) and the cup washer (8) from its rod on upper end, and the upper rubber mount (10) and the upper cup washer (9) from its rod on bottom end | Note the full release of the dampers and, if necessary, slightly move the rear axle by actuating the lift.
| Clean | ||
8 | Thoroughly clean all components, especially the parts supported by the frame | Eliminate any signs of rust
Rubber pads should not be cleaned with solvent fluids.
| Check | ||
9 | Check the condition of the dampers | It is important to consider that the front dampers interfere with the steering behavior of the vehicle, therefore we recommend that original dampers are used at all times, and that they are replaced in pairs, on the same axle and on both sides.
Replace the dampers if they show:
| |||
Worn or damaged rods. | |||
| Install | ||
10 | Install the cup washers (8) and the bottom rubber mount (7) on upper rod of the new shock absorbers (2) (2 on each side), and insert the rods in the support plates at the structure (6). Install the upper rubber mounts (5) and the cup washers with integrated hexagon and oblong hole (4) by the upper side of the support plate | Be sure to properly position the u-cups.
11 | Hold the cup washer with integrated hexagon and oblong hole (4) by the hexagon using an open end wrench and while simultaneously tighten the self-locking nut (3) to the specified tightening torque | Do not tighten in excess, because the cup washer with integrated hexagon and oblong hole (4) limits the tightening on the stop on the shock absorber rod (indicated by the arrow) preventing the rubber mounts are deformed by the tightening.
.Dumpers on the chassis
12 | Install the upper cup washers (9) and the upper rubber mount (10) on bottom rod of the new shock absorbers (2) (2 in each side), and insert the rods in the support plate (bellows bracket) fixed to the axle (11) at the vehicle structure (1). Install the bottom rubber mounts (12) and the cup washers with integrated hexagon and oblong hole (13) by the bottom side of the support plate | Observe the correct position of the convex washers.
13 | Hold the cup washer with integrated hexagon and oblong hole (14) by the hexagon using an open end wrench and simultaneously tighten the self-locking nut (14) to the specified tightening torque | Do not apply excessive torque because the convex washer (13) limits the tightening at the shock absorber rod stop (indicated by the arrow).
.Dumpers on the chassis
14 | Install the wheels if they have been removed |
| |
Observe the subsequent re-tightening required.
Danger | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
15 | Lower the vehicle from the lift
16 | Connect the negative battery cable or turn on the main switch | For vehicles equipped with electronic engines, always observe the recommendations regarding the care with the vehicle electronics.
17 | Run the engine and pressurize the pneumatic system of the vehicle | Note any evidence of leaks at the bellows.
18 | Make a test drive, preferably on a ripple terrain | Check the vehicle's behavior. |
