General telematics services
At the vehicle side, the telematics services are realized by the telematics services communications module via a mobile radio connection to the Service Center. The telematics services communications module transmits and receives the mobile phone signals via the emergency call system antenna.
In vehicles with CODE 06U (Mercedes connect me basic services) the following services are also available:
Breakdown service ("Accident Management"): The customer can request technical assistance after an accident via a voice connection.
Breakdown assistance ("Breakdown Management"): The customer can request technical assistance via a voice connection. With the consent of the customer, vehicle data can be transmitted in order to provide quicker and more effective assistance.
Service and maintenance ("Maintenance and Teleguard"): If the customer has taken out a service and maintenance contract, vehicle data is transmitted via the Service Center to the service partners if necessary; the service partner then notifies the customer that service is required using the medium selected by the customer (e.g. "MyMercedes", email, telephone). If the customer has not taken out a service and maintenance contract, a pop-up window appears on the Audio/COMAND display 5 days before the calculated service date, asking whether a connection to customer center should be set up. If the customer selects "Call now", a voice connection is established to the Service Center. If the customer selects "Call later", the pop-up window is displayed again later. If the customer selects "No, thank you", no pop-up window is displayed when the service is due.
In vehicles with CODE 05U (Remote Online), various app services can also be enabled. These app services allow the customer to use his terminals (e.g. smartphone, tablet or PC) to transmit information and operating requests to the vehicle via the Service Center and receive up-to-date vehicle data that has been prepared by the app. For example, the following app service are available:
Geographical vehicle monitoring: The customer is informed on-line as soon as his vehicle leaves or reaches an area marked by the customer.
Vehicle locating: The customer is informed on-line of the current vehicle location by transferring geo-coordinates; the activation of this function is indicated in the vehicle by an icon on the Audio/COMAND display.
Vehicle location: The customer can locate the vehicle within an area of 1.5 km using the smartphone; this makes it easier to find the vehicle, e.g. in a large car park or in unfamiliar cities.
Vehicle status remote query: vehicle data such as the status of the doors and the fuel level can be retrieved on-line.
Stationary heater programming (with CODE 228 (Stationary heater): The switch-on time of the stationary heater can be set without range limitations, and the status of the stationary heater can be queried on-line.
The telematics services function encompasses the following subfunctions:
Voice connection between vehicle and service center (with CODE 06U (Mercedes connect me basic services))
Position finding
Forwarding of vehicle data, displays, data queries and operating requests
The emergency call, the Internet connection and the transfer of real-time traffic data are described elsewhere.
Additional function requirements for voice connection between vehicle and Service Center (with CODE 06U (Mercedes connect me basic services))
No smartphone connected to the multimedia connection unit and no integration standard (CarPlay, MirrorLink 1.1) activated
Voice connection between vehicle and service center (with CODE 06U (Mercedes connect me basic services))
By selecting the reserved telephone book entry "MB-Contact", the telematics services communications module sets up a voice connection with the Mercedes-Benz Service Center via the emergency call system antenna. The telephone book entry "MB-Contact" can be selected with one of the following components:
Audio/COMAND control panel
Multifunction steering wheel button groups
Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS))
The setup of a voice connection to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center is aborted after several unsuccessful dialing attempts, and a corresponding message appears on the Audio/COMAND display.
Telematics services, e.g. the breakdown service, can also be triggered by the Service Center following an emergency call with the customer's consent. In this case, the voice connection that was set up for the emergency call is used again by means of transferring within the Service Center. The emergency call is then converted into a service with lower priority.
Audio/COMAND control panel
The Audio/COMAND control panel control signals are forwarded via telematics CAN to the audio equipment.
Multifunction steering wheel button groups
The multifunction steering wheel button groups send the control signals via the following route:
Steering wheel electronics
Steering LIN
Steering column tube module control unit
Chassis CAN 1
Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module
Chassis CAN 2
Instrument cluster
Interior CAN
Audio unit
Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS))
The voice control system is activated on the left multifunction steering wheel button group. The voice control system is automatically switched off when the call is set up.
The control signal from the left multifunction steering wheel button group is sent as follows:
Steering wheel electronics
Steering LIN
Steering column tube module control unit
Chassis CAN 1
Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module
Chassis CAN 2
Instrument cluster
Interior CAN
Audio unit
If the voice control system is active, the voice commands are acquired by the hands-free system microphone group and forwarded to the audio equipment via a direct line.
The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".
If the phonebook entry "MB Contact" has been selected, the audio equipment sends the signal for requesting the establishment of a voice connection via the following route:
Interior CAN
Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module
Diagnostic CAN
Telematics services communication module
The telematics services communications module establishes a voice connection to the Service Center via the emergency call system antenna and transmits vehicle data.
When a voice connection is set up, the telematics services communications module transmits a signal for muting the audio sources via a direct line to the following component, which actuates the speaker system:
Sound system amplifier control unit (with CODE 810 (Sound system))
Audio equipment (except CODE 810 (Sound system))
The hands-free system is not available for telephone calls for the duration of the voice connection.
After a data telegram has been transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center, the user can speak to a service receptionist via the voice connection. The Mercedes-Benz Service Center carries out the call in the language that was selected in the system settings of the audio equipment and transmitted in the data telegram. The hands-free system microphone group that is integrated in the inside rear-view mirror (A67) is used for voice input.
The telematics services communications module receives the outgoing voice signals from the hands-free system microphone group via the audio equipment.
The telematics services communications module outputs the incoming voice signals via the center instrument panel speaker.
The volume of the voice output can be adjusted using the following controls:
Right multifunction steering wheel button group
Audio unit
Audio/COMAND control panel
Position finding
Determining the current vehicle location is vital for many telematics services, for which reason the telematics services communications module has its own position finding module. For position finding, the telematics services communications module uses the satellite supported global navigation system (GPS) positioning system. GPS is available worldwide. GPS position finding is irretrievable after vehicle transport (e.g. by train or ferry or after towing). Subsequent GPS position finding (following an interruption in satellite reception) can take several minutes. A basic position finding routine runs in parallel to the GPS position finding routine that makes it possible to also locate the position of the vehicle if GPS reception fails.
The position finding function consists of the following component functions:
GPS position finding
Basic position finding
GPS position finding
In vehicles with CODE 505 (Radio 20 NTG5 not navigation capable), the telematics services communications module receives the GPS signal from the multifunction antenna.
On vehicles with code 522 (Audio 20 radio) or with code 531 (COMAND APS), the audio equipment receives the GPS signal from the multifunction antenna and forwards it via the following route:
Interior CAN
Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module
Diagnostic CAN
Telematics services communication module
Additional function requirement for basic position finding
Circuit 15R ON
Basic position finding
The telematics services communications module requires the following signals for basic position finding:
Wheel speed and yaw rate signals from the Electronic Stability Program control unit (except CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS)) or from the Premium Electronic Stability Program control unit (with CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS))
Steering angle sensor
The Electronic Stability Program control unit (except code 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS)) or the Premium Electronic Stability Program control unit (with code 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS)) sends the wheel speed and yaw rate signals via the following route:
Chassis CAN 1
Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module
Diagnostic CAN
The telematics services communications module receives the signal of the steering angle sensor via the following route:
Steering column tube module control unit
Chassis CAN 1
Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module
Diagnostic CAN
The telematics services communications module uses the data to calculate the current vehicle position (longitude and latitude).
Location errors in position finding, rolling backwards with "circuit 15 OFF" (ignition switched off) or transport of the vehicle falsify the basic position finding. In both cases, this deviation is automatically corrected on receipt of GPS data.
In vehicles with a functional navigation system (with CODE 357 (Map navigation) or with CODE 531 (COMAND APS)), the telematics services communications module receives the GPS signals as well as additional position data that also support basic position finding from the audio equipment.
Forwarding of vehicle data, displays, data queries and operating requests
The telematics services communications module forwards data queries and control requests, received over the mobile phone connection to the Service Center, over the diagnostic CAN to the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module. The telematics services communications module receives vehicle data over the diagnostic CAN from the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module and routes this specific data as well as the data from the integrated positioning module according to the requirements over the emergency call system antenna to the Service Center.
The information shown on the Audio/COMAND display (e.g. pop-up windows, vehicle tracking) is transmitted to the Audio/COMAND display by the telematics services communications module via the following route:
Diagnostic CAN
Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module
Interior CAN
Audio equipment
