Insertion tool
The special tool measuring device contains the tools required for the measurement: Threaded rod (05), pinion support (06), housing support (07), dial indicator (08), punch (09), support disk (010), force applicator (011), toggle (012).
1 | Insert determined spacer washer into mounting hole for inner bearing shell. |
The chamfered side of the spacer washer must face towards the mounting hole. |
2 | Insert inner bearing shell into rear axle housing (1). |
Align bearing shell parallel to mounting hole. New bearing shells may not be oiled or cleaned, and they must be installed in the supplied condition. |
3 | Draw bearing shell using insertion tool (01) into rear axle housing (1). |
4 | Check contact surface of bearing shell on rear axle housing (1) using feeler gauge (thickness 0.05 mm). |
The bearing shell must be fitted flush to the mounting hole in the rear axle housing (1). |
P35.31-2304-03
5 | Insert drive pinion (2) into rear axle housing (1). |
6 | Mount installer tool (04) onto rear axle housing (1) and fasten spindle to centering bore of drive pinion (2). |
7 | Fix drive pinion (2) with spindle into place on bearing shell. |
P35.31-2271-06
8 | Mount threaded rod (05) onto pinion support (06). |
9 | Screw pinion support (06) with threaded rod (05) finger-tight on to drive pinion (2). |
P35.31-2305-03
10 | Insert housing support (07) into rear axle housing (1). |
P35.31-2306-03
11 | Insert bearing shell (3) of outer tapered roller bearing (4). |
P35.31-2307-03
12 | Insert dial indicator (08) into punch (09) and set a pretension of 3.5 mm. |
13 | Position punch (09) with dial indicator (08) onto tapered roller bearing (4) and calibrate dial indicator (08) to 0. |
The calibration procedure for the dial indicator (08) must be made on the measuring plate. |
P35.31-2308-03
14 | mount punch (09) with dial indicator (08) and tapered roller bearing (4) onto pinion support (06). |
Make sure that the dowel pin (5) of the pinion support (06) engages in the bore (6) of the punch (09). |
P35.31-2309-03
15 | Insert support disk (010). |
P35.31-2310-03
16 | Screw force applicator (011) with spring on to threaded rod (05). |
The toggle (012) must be in the uppermost position during assembly, to prevent any spring pretension. |
To screw on the force applicator (011) the drive pinion (2) must be held. |
17 | Turn toggle (012) with zero clearance up against spring. |
Note deflection of the number value, caused by rotation of the toggle (012) on the dial indicator (08). The deflection intensity initially stays at a constant level and drops off suddenly after several turns. At this particular moment, the free play of the spring is reached and the toggle (012) may then no longer be turned. |
Check for free play through spring's up and down movement. |
18 | Turn toggle (012) through 14 turns to the right. |
19 | Turn the entire structure on the hexagon (arrow a) 10 turns clockwise. |
This serves to ensure that the bearing shell (3) is correctly seated. |
20 | Turn toggle (012) through another 14 turns to the right. |
21 | Determine highest and lowest measurement by turning entire structure, read off on dial indicator (08) and note down. |
22 | Calculate mean value. |
The mean value is calculated by adding the highest and lowest measurement values, and then dividing the result through 2. |
23 | Calculate thickness of shim (7). |
The shim thickness is determined by adding the specified correction value and the mean value. |
Example
(Highest measurement + Lowest measurement) : 2 = Mean value
(2.515 mm + 2.505 mm) : 2 = 2.51 mm
Mean value + Correction value = Shim thickness
2.51 mm + 0.07 mm = 2.58 mm (tolerance 5 μm)
24 | Detach all special tools. |
25 | Remove drive pinion (2). |
26 | Install outer bearing shell (3) using a suitable drift. |
Align the bearing shell (3) parallel to the mounting hole. Do not oil or clean new bearing shells; they must be installed in the supplied condition. |
27 | Install drive pinion (2) and fix in place with spindle. |
The drive pinion (2) may not be installed with zero clearance. |
P35.31-2311-03
28 | Insert determined shim (7). |
P35.31-2313-03
29 | Insert tapered roller bearing (4). |
P35.31-2314-03
30 | Drive in old joint flange (8) without radial shaft sealing ring using suitable sleeve and rubber hammer, until the collar nut can be screwed on. |
31 | Screw on collar nut by hand. |
P35.31-2315-03
32 | Mount retainer wrench (013) onto joint flange (8). |
33 | Tighten collar nut to specified torque, . |
34 | Turn drive pinion (2) 5 turns clockwise at collar nut and then retighten to specified torque, . |
35 | Remove retaining wrench (013). |
P35.31-2316-01
36 | Using torque meter (014), determine friction value and compare with specified value. |
If the measured value is outside the tolerance range, the entire procedure has to be repeated. |
37 | Detach old joint flange (8). |
If the measured friction value is within the tolerance range |
