The sprocket and the pinion form a distinct assembly, whose tolerances and finish do not allow their individual interchange, so that the regulation of the basic measurement and the gap between teeth, are sufficient for their assembly.
Regardless, it can be made for inspection, the verification of contact marks of the sprocket teeth joint and pinion.
Verification of contact marks
1 | Grease with "Prussian blue", two distant sprocket teeth at 180° each other. |
2 | Turn the pinion forward and backward braking, at the same time, ring gear with a hardwood piece. |
3 | Compare the contact marks with the contact marks examples below and, if necessary, make the proper corrections. |
In practice, they have not often reached the best contact marks. However, it is important that they do not touch any place on the external teeth edges. |

Contact marks on the teeth base (incorrect)
4 | Correct the contact between the flanks of the teeth. |
Slightly increase the mounting distance (basic measurement) of the pinion and, at the same time, slightly decrease the mounting distance of the sprocket. |

Contact marks on the teeth head (incorrect)
5 | Correct the contact between the flanks of the teeth. |
Slightly decrease the mounting distance (basic measurement) of the pinion and, at the same time, slightly increase the mounting distance of the sprocket. |
