| Remove/install | ||
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | ||
1 | Loosen bolt (2) or collar nut of right front axle shaft (1) | Lift vehicle until wheel bearing is relieved of load in order to avoid damage to the wheel bearing.
Installation: To prevent damage to wheel bearing, take care not to exceed tightening torque of bolt (2) and collar nut.
If necessary (corrosion on collar nut and front axle shaft flange) a hub cap (see EPC) can be assembled.
| |||
| |||
2 | Remove front wheel | ||
| Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary | ||
3 | Remove bolt (2) or collar nut of right front axle shaft (1) | Install new bolt (2) and collar nut.
Spray front axle shaft stub on the front axle shaft flange using antiseize and allow to take effect.
Installation: Screw in bolt (2) or collar nut up to contact surface.
Antiseize | |||
4.1 | Detach lower engine compartment paneling | On engine 266 without Code (484) Rough road package
For engine 266 with code (484) Rough road package
4.2 | Remove bottom section of soundproofing | With engine 640
5 | Unclip and expose electrical line of right front rpm sensor (L6/2) on suspension strut (3)
6 | Unclip and expose electrical line (10) of right front brake pad contact sensor (S10/2) on suspension strut (3)
7 | Place rag between transverse control arm (4) and front axle carrier (5) (arrow) | This will prevent damage to corrosion protection layer on front axle carrier (5) and transverse control arm (4).
Installation: If the corrosion protection layer is damaged at the time of pressing down the transverse control arm, it must be repaired with preservation wax (aerosol).
Preservation agent | |||
8 | Remove flange ball joint (6) from transverse control arm (4) | Mark contour of flange ball joint on transverse control arm.
Installation: Align flange ball joint accurately with the marked contour on the transverse control arm.
| |||
9 | Pull right-hand front axle shaft (1) out of the front axle shaft flange (7) | Do not pull right front axle shaft (1) too far out of the inner constant velocity joint, otherwise the inner constant velocity joint can be damaged.
Do not hammer seized front axle shaft out of the front axle shaft flange otherwise the wheel bearing may be damaged.
In the event of a seized front axle shaft: See:
Press front axle shaft out of front axle shaft flange.

Teflon spray | |||
10 | Remove shield (8) from intermediate bearing (9) | With engine 266
11 | Remove intermediate bearing (9) from crankcase
12 | Remove bolt (11) from transmission | With engine 640
13 | Remove hose clamp (12) | With engine 640
14 | Detach right front axle shaft (1) from transmission using a suitable tool
15.1 | Press down catalytic converter (13) and remove right front axle shaft (1) downwards | With engine 640
Installation: The exhaust system must be mounted free of tension, if required align exhaust system.
15.2 | Remove right front axle shaft (1) to the side | With engine 266
16 | Check boots on right front axle shaft (1) | Install new boots if damaged. See:
Remove/install boots on front axle shaft
Outer boot | |||
Inner boot on transmission 711.6, 716.5
Inner boot on transmission 722.8
17 | Install in the reverse order
Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
18 | Carry out an engine test run and test exhaust system for leaks | With engine 640
19 | Perform wheel alignment check | Only required if the flange ball joint (6) relative to the transverse control arm (4) was not marked or the marking is no longer clearly recognizable. |
