Assessment of deficiency phases based on coolant colors
The sample bottle must be shook before assessment is carried out.
Owing to the slightly different color rendering in the WIS, a description of the individual coolant colors is given below.
Deficiency phase 1 (1): Orange coolant color (start of opacity)
Deficiency phase 2 (2): Orange/light brown coolant color
Deficiency phase 3 (3): Black/brown coolant color
Deficiency phase 4 (4): Black/brown coolant color
A | No contamination |
B | Significant contamination |

Assessment of deficiency phases based on condition of coolant expansion reservoir
To precisely differentiate between the first deficiency phase 1 (1) and the other deficiency phases (2, 3, 4), at least 8 l of coolant must be drained off. Furthermore, the contamination in the coolant expansion reservoir must be determined using a white cloth.
If the engine cooling system is still in deficiency phase 1 (1), the following points must be apply:
A red coolant level message appears in the display.
The coolant expansion reservoir does not yet exhibit any contamination (A).
If the engine cooling system is already in the deficiency phases (2, 3, 4), at least one of the following points applies:
No red coolant level message appears in the display.
The coolant expansion reservoir exhibits significant contamination (B).
Assessment of deficiency phases based on the flow volume of the heater core
This assessment is only to be conducted when the deficiency phase 2 (2) was determined from preceding assessments.
This assessment may cause the engine cooling system in which the deficiency phase 2 (2) was previously determined, to now be in deficiency phase 3/4 (3, 4). In this case, the activities are to be performed as per deficiency phase 3/4 (3, 4) to ensure no further problems arise.
The assessment of the flow volume is available in the current work instructions, AR83.20-W-1110H Checking flow volume of heater core.
