114 Diesel particulate filter (DPF)

Location

The DPF is bolted together with the oxidation catalytic converter to form one unit and is located at the bottom right of the engine.

Task

The diesel particulate filter filters, stores and burns the soot particles that are generated during the combustion process.

Design

The diesel particulate filter consists of a ceramic honeycomb filter body out of silicon carbide, which is coated with rare metal platinum. The passages of the diesel particulate filter are opened alternatively at front and rear and are separated from each other through the porous filter walls of the honeycomb filter body.

Function

The unfiltered exhaust flows into the passages of the DPF which are open to the front and filters through the porous filter walls of the ceramic honeycomb filter body into passages which are open to the rear. The soot particles are retained physically in the honeycomb filter body of the diesel particulate filter and are burnt during the regeneration phase.
