Service Information: Coolant

As part of ongoing technical development, the introduction of the new Actros (model 963) has seen a change in the coolant used. The previous anticorrosion/antifreeze agent G48® (green/blue color) has been replaced by the anticorrosion/antifreeze agent G40® (red color).

The anticorrosion/antifreeze agent G40® exhibits the following advantages compared with G48® :

 Lower deposits in engine cooling system

 Improved heat dissipation

 Higher environmental compatibility, because there are no ecologically harmful constituents containing borax.

The conversion of the anticorrosion/antifreeze agent took place at the plant for all model series. Exceptions hereto were the special-purpose vehicles Zetros (model 949) and Econic (model 957). Conversions for these took place at the plant as of vehicle identification end number 233 457 with an end of March 2013 manufacture date.

The new Actros, Antos (model 963), Arocs (model 964), Atego (967) and the Econic (model 956) may only be operated with the new anticorrosion agent/antifreeze G40®.

 Model 963 preproduction vehicles which were produced before the market launch, are still filled with the anticorrosion/antifreeze agent G48® (green/blue color). These vehicles must be converted at the latest when replacing the coolant (e.g. when the maintenance interval is reached or where soiling occurs). Flush the engine cooling system before adding the new refrigerant. To do so, add fresh water to the engine and run it at different speeds for approx. 5 minutes. For vehicles with code B3H (Secondary water retarder) select the maximum brake stage of the retarder a number of times. If the rinse water is still colored, rinse once more.

 Vehicles with code B3H (Secondary water retarder) may not be moved during the rinsing procedure.

Otherwise the retarder will be damaged.

Mixing of the anticorrosion/antifreeze agent agents is not permissible. Any mixing would result in a rust-brown discoloration. This discoloration may result in complaints.

Before refilling, it is necessary to ascertain which anticorrosion/antifreeze agent was used to fill the vehicle.

For the new anticorrosion/antifreeze agent G40® the Service Product Sheets 325.5 and 326.5 must be used.
