Risk of injury due to touching the hot retarder surface or being scalded with hot retarder surface oil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes due to retarder oil spraying out under high pressure

Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder surface

Secure vehicle against rolling

Jack up vehicle at rear axle and place on axle stands

So that the propeller shaft can be turned for removal.

Detach lower engine compartment paneling

Only carry out steps for removing the engine compartment paneling under the transmission.

Detach propeller shaft (1) from retarder (2) and from rear axle (3)

Before detaching the propeller shaft (1):

- Mark the sliding sleeve (4) relative to the propeller shaft (1) (arrows)

- and bind the propeller shaft (1) together via both joints using a suitable cable.

Installation: If the propeller shaft (1) has been separated: When assembling the propeller shaft (1) and sliding sleeve (4) it is essential to bring the markings (arrows) into alignment (arrows).
