General
Calibration of the compass is required after replacing the APS navigation processor (A2/30), performing welding work on the vehicle or following conversion work affecting the magnetic field on the vehicle (e.g. roof top carrier). To calibrate the compass it is necessary to drive the vehicle in a circle with a diameter of at least 20 m. The rear window defroster (R1) must be switched off.
Calibration can be accomplished with menu guidance on the radio and navigation operating unit (A2/29).

Function
During the calibration drive the correctional values from the electronic compass (B26) are read and stored by the APS navigation processor (A2/30). Simultaneously the changes in direction are determined from the differences between the signals from the axle VSS sensors (L6/1 and L6/2).
The navigation processor compares the two values and calculates the correction factor for the electronic compass (B26). These are stored in a non-volatile memory.
