Basic map matching (composite positioning) via points of the compass and mileage covered
GPS satellite map matching
Map-supported location finding
Constant map matching is the calculation of the vehicles current position. It is active when the ignition is switched and is carried out by the navigation processor. During the switch-on phase (software is loaded), only basic map matching is available.
After switching the ignition off, all important positioning parameters are stored for the duration of the run-on time (approx. 30 min).
Constant location finding uses 3 methods which supplement each other mutually and thus guarantee very accurate and reliable location finding. These include:
Basic position finding (dead reckoning)
Map-supported map matching
GPS location finding
Manual input of vehicle location
There is the facility of entering the location manually on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). This can be useful in the following cases:
After transporting the vehicle (e.g. ferry or train)
If there is no GPS reception at the start of a journey
As of 1.9.03 the navigation processor (N41/1) is installed as a separate control unit in the left of the engine compartment.
