Both turbochargers (1, 2) are located on the right side of the engine below the exhaust gas recirculation cooler.
Task
The turbochargers (1, 2) convert the thermal energy of the exhaust flow into mechanical energy and compact the suctioned air. The combination of the different sizes of turbocharger (1, 2) for the high and low pressure stage allows the mass flow of the exhaust to be optionally used over the whole engine rpm range in order, finally, to achieve the optimal boost pressure.

Engine oil (A) passes to the bearings on the shafts (5, 9) via the oil supply connections (11, 12) which are lubricated and cooled in this way. Via a return line, the engine oil flows back again into the crankcase and from there into the oil pan.
