Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Remove/install

Open and close fuel filler cap.

 To reduce the pressure in the fuel tank (1).

Empty the fuel tank (1).

Raise vehicle.

Remove underbody paneling.

If installed.

 Installation: Install underfloor paneling only after the leak test.

Remove hose (2).


Catch fuel running out with suitable vessel.
Damage will otherwise occur.

 To do this, loosen the clamps (3).

 Commercially available tools
Collection bowl

 Installation: The markings (arrows) on the hose (2), fuel tank (1) and filler neck must be aligned with each other.

 Installation: Check the hose (2) and clamps (3).

Depending on the findings,



Replace affected components.

Disconnect electrical connector (4).

Disconnect the fuel lines (5, 6).

 Seal the fuel lines (5, 6).

Disconnect the fuel line (7).

 Secure the fuel tank (1) against falling down using suitable tools.

Remove the tensioning straps (8).

 For this purpose, remove screws (9). The number of tensioning straps (8) varies depending on equipment installed.

Remove fuel tank(1).

 Lower the fuel tank (1).

 Caution

Risk of injury caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts

Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.
Deburr repair panels.

Remove the heat shield (10).

If the fuel tank (1) / heat shield (10) is replaced.

 To do this, remove the expansion rivets (11).

 Installation: Check the expansion rivets (11).

Depending on the findings,



Replace the affected expansion rivet (11).

Remove the fuel pump and fill level sensor.

If the fuel pump and fill level sensor or fuel tank (1) are replaced.

Install in the reverse order



Switch on ignition.


Before the engine is started, leave the ignition switched on until the end of delivery from the fuel pump to ensure that fuel is present at the fuel high-pressure pump when the engine is started.
This helps to prevent damage to the fuel system.

Start engine.

 Warning

Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Test the fuel system in the area of the fuel tank (1) for leaks.


Remove any fuel that has leaked out.
Damage will otherwise occur.

Switch off engine.
