Modification notes
| Remove/install | ||
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by body parts being jammed or crushed. Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system | Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | ||
| Notes on AIRmatic | ||
| Before opening the SBC system, thoroughly clean the surrounding area of the separation point. Even minute particles of dirt, introduced into the hydraulic components, can result in malfunctions and a total failure of the SBC system | ||
| When working on the front-end assembly, be careful not to scratch, mark or notch the surfaces of aluminum parts. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected | ||
Installation | Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.
1 | Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS. | Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS: Select the menu item "SBC-Sensotronic Brake Control"/"Initial startup after repair"/"Deactivate 'SBC' system". Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.
2 | Deflate front suspension strut (7) using STAR DIAGNOSIS | Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489
3 | Remove front wheel | ||
| Remove/install wheels | ||
4 | Remove left front rpm sensor (L6/1) or right front rpm sensor (L6/2) from steering knuckle (5) and hang up to one side | Vehicles without Airmatic (semi-active air suspension)
To do this, unscrew bolt (6a) and unclip electrical feed cables from retaining clips.
Installation: Observe correct observe installation position, the chafe protection (5a) must be screwed to the rpm sensor (L6/1, L6/2) as shown. It must not be assembled between the rpm sensor (L6/1, L6/2) and steering knuckle (5).
| |||
5 | Separate left front brake pad contact sensor (S10/1) or right front brake pad contact sensor (S10/2) at connector | Vehicles without Airmatic (semi-active air suspension)
6 | Detach electrical feed line (10a) of left front brake pad contact sensor (S10/1) or right front brake pad contact sensor (S10/2) from brake caliper | Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489
| |||
Danger! | Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes. | Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.
7 | Detach brake hose (51) from brake line (52) | Seal brake line (52) immediately with stop plugs, the brake fluid expansion reservoir must not run empty.
Installation: The brake hose (51) must not be twisted after tightening (risk of cracking).
When loosening and tightening the brake line (52) on the brake hose (51), take care not to twist the bracket (51a). Use an open wrench to counterhold at the two flats of the brake hose (51).

| Notes on installing brake hoses | ||
8.1 | Detach front spring strut (7) from front end by unscrewing nuts (7a) | Vehicles without Airmatic (semi-active air suspension)
8.2 | Disconnect electrical and pneumatic feed lines of front suspension strut (7) and detach suspension strut (7) from front end | Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489
9 | Detach electrical connector of left front brake pad contact sensor (S10/1) or right front brake pad contact sensor (S10/2) and left front rpm sensor (L6/1) or right front rpm sensor (L6/2) | Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489
10 | Pry the tie rod ball joint (9a) off the steering knuckle (5)
| |||
| |||
| |||
11 | Detach torque strut (18) from front axle carrier (1) | Do not twist bolt (18a). Counterhold bolt (18a) when slackening the nut. Otherwise the fixing lugs for the caster adjustment in the rubber mount will be sheared off when the repair kit is fitted.
| |||
12 | Mount guard plate for brake cover plate
| |||
13 | Support front halfshaft
14 | Remove link rod (78k) of stabilizer bar (78) from pivot bushing (17d) in spring control arm (17)
15 | Detach spring control arm (17) from front-axle carrier (1) | The bolt (17a) must not turn. Counterhold bolt (17a) when slackening the nut. When the repair kit is fitted, otherwise the fixing lugs for camber adjustment in the rubber mount will be sheared off.
| |||
| |||
16 | Press follower joint (8a) out of steering knuckle (5). | In the process secure the steering knuckle (5) to prevent it from tilting.
| |||
| |||
17 | Remove front axle half
18 | Remove upper transverse control arm (8) | If necessary
19 | Install in the reverse order
20.1 | Bleed brake system with STAR DIAGNOSIS | Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS: Select menu item "initial startup after repair"/"after opening or exchanging one or more brake hoses". Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.
When performing the bleeding operation always observe the instructions in the document "Bleeding brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS".
20.2 | Bleed brake system | Vehicles with Adaptive Brake (ABR)
21 | Perform a wheel alignment check |
