 Warning

Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Check

Check on-board electrical system battery (2).

Fulfill preconditions for alternator test.

Attach multimeter (1) to on-board electrical system battery (2) according to connection scheme.

Start engine.

Check the charge indicator while at an idle and with increasing engine speed (up to 3,000 rpm).

 In case of correct charging voltage, no fault message is shown in the display on the instrument cluster.

Check charging voltage.

 Only apply load to on-board electrical system battery (2) through corresponding permanent consumers (e.g. lighting). Remove transitional resistances at electrical connections of charging system.

In case of charging voltage < 13.0 V



Check diodes of alternator (3).

In case of charging voltage > 14.5 V



Replace alternator (3).

Switch off engine.

Remove multimeter (1).
