Warning | Risk of injury. Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. | Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary.
Warning | Risk of injury. Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. | No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating area of mechanical components when moving components.
Caution | Risk of injury caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts | Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.
Caution | Risk of injury to skin and eyes due to handling of engine oil. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing engine oil | Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
Topical note | Notes on avoiding damage through contamination and foreign objects
| Remove | ||
1 | Remove heat exchanger.
2 | Remove timing case cover.
Preparatory tasks | |||
3 | Move camshafts to default position. | To do this, turn crankshaft (10) in direction of engine rotation using an open-end wrench.
4 | Remove screw plug (1) from crankcase (11).
5 | Screw drift into bore on crankcase (11). | Drift
6 | Turn engine at crankshaft (10) in opposite direction of engine rotation until crankshaft (10) is in contact with drift. | Drift
| Check | ||
7 | Attach adjusting tool (3) with screw (4) to the cylinder head cover (5). | During attachment, wedge (9) on adjustment tool (3) must engage in grooves (8) of exhaust camshaft, while pins (6) of adjustment tool (3) must engage in bores (7) of intake-camshaft gearwheel. If adjustment tool (3) can be attached without high force expenditure, the camshafts are in the basic position.
Adjustment tool | |||
If the adjusting tool (3) cannot be attached,
| |||
Turn crankshaft until adjustment tool (3) can be attached with ease.
To do this, turn crankshaft only slightly either in direction of engine rotation or in opposite direction of engine rotation.
Adjustment tool | |||
If necessary in order to turn crankshaft:
| |||
remove drift again. | |||
Drift | |||
If adjustment tool (3) still cannot be attached with ease after turning crankshaft (10):
| |||
Set basic position of camshafts.
Concluding tasks | |||
8 | Remove drift from bore on crankcase (11). | Drift
9 | Screw screw plug (1) into crankcase (11). | Screw plug for bore, special tool TDC to crankcase
| Install | ||
10 | Install timing case cover.
11 | Install heat exchanger. |
