Remove

1

Remove low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation cooler.

Remove cylinder head cover.

Remove impact plate in front of poly-V-belt.

Adjust

Rotate engine on belt pulley/vibration damper using a counterholder in direction of engine rotation and set the piston on cylinder 1 to TDC (ignition TDC).


Do not rotate engine backwards.
Otherwise the timing chain jumps and causes engine damage.

 The 0° marking on belt pulley/vibration damper must align with the marking on the crankcase.

Install hold-down tool (7b) for exhaust camshaft (1b).

 If necessary, turn engine at belt pulley/vibration damper in direction of engine rotation using the   counterholder.

Loosen screw (2b).

 Screw(2b) has left-hand thread.

Lock camshaft sprockets (3a, 3b) using locking pins.

Remove screws of camshaft housing (5) on cylinder head.

Turn intake camshaft (1a) on screw (2a) until the marking (arrow) matches the marking on the camshaft housing (5).

Install hold-down tool (7a).

Install retaining lock.

Tighten screws of camshaft housing (5) on cylinder head.

Tighten screws (6) of hold-down tools (7a, 7b) on cylinder head.

Remove screw(2b).

Screw in screw (2) and tighten.

 Replace screw (2b).

Remove screws (6) and remove hold-down tools (7a, 7b).

Remove locking pins on camshaft sprockets (3a, 3b).



Check

Remove locating pin from retaining lock.

Rotate engine with retaining lock two revolutions in direction of engine rotation to top dead center (ignition TDC) of cylinder 1.

 The markings (arrows) on the intake camshaft (1a) and the exhaust camshaft (1b) must match with markings on the camshaft housing (5).

Mark out crankshaft.

Install hold-down tools (7a, 7b).

 Check for correct seating of the hold-down tools (7a, 7b).

If the hold-down tools (7a, 7b) cannot be inserted



repeat adjustment procedure if necessary.



Remove retaining lock.
