 Warning

Risk of injury caused by touching hot retarder and by scalding from hot retarderoil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure

Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder.

Place the operating lever for adjusting the continuous engine/brake in the "0" position, and turn off the ignition

Remove the step

Clean the area around central oil drain plug (2), sealing plug with strainer (6), and oil filler plug (8 or 10)

Remove oil filler plug (8 or 10)

 Depending on access or in vehicles with a fixed structure, oil may be filled in through oil filler plug bore (8 or 10).

Remove central oil drain plug (2) and drain the engine oil into a clean container

 Drain oil only at high oil temperatures. Measure the drained oil to determine its volume.

If oil volume is too low:



Check the retarder for possible leakage.

If oil volume is too high:



Check the transmission for possible leakage.

Remove and replace O-Rings (3 and 4) and sealing ring (5) for central oil drain plug (2)

 Grease all new O-Rings with vaseline.

Install central oil drain plug (2)

 Check central drain plug

Remove sealing plug with strainer (6) from retarder housing (1)

Clean sealing plug strainer (6) with gasoline and compressed air

Install sealing plug with strainer (6)

 Replace the sealing ring (7).

 Pressure regulating valve closing bolt on the retarder case

Slowly fill in the specified oil supply quantity

 For correct air discharge from the retarder system, the oil must be filled in slowly over a space of time of more than 3 minutes. In case of difficult access or in vehicles with a fixed structure, oil may be filled in with a hand pump through the oil filler plug bore (10).

Insert and tighten oil filler plug (8)

 Replace sealing ring (9).
