BODY 972.899 with CODE (SA5) Driver's airbag
Function
The heart of the supplemental restraint system (SRS) is the airbag control module (A40). Among other items it has a head-on collision recognition feature. Accidents deviating 30° to the vehicle longitudinal axis are recognized. The airbag control module monitors the motion of the vehicle. During an accident the vehicle decelerates rapidly (negative acceleration). In such cases it is necessary to differentiate between an accident and intended emergency braking maneuver. The actuation threshold is set to a relative change in speed of 20 km/h upon
impact with a flat, immovable barrier, while the non-actuation threshold is defined to be a relative change in speed of 15 km/h. Triggering is possible between these values.
In order to correctly evaluate the deceleration two acceleration sensors are installed in the airbag control module, whose signals are subjected to different signal processing.
If the deceleration is recognized as an accident, the airbag and emergency tensioning retractors are activated.
