The navigation system can be activated by pressing the "NAV" button on the radio and navigation unit (A2/56).

The location of the vehicle as well as the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation system (after entering the destination). Then the actions required for reaching the destination (route guidance) are started.

The radio and navigation unit (A2/56) is used as a diagnostic interface with central computer, CD drive and navigation processor with GPS receiver and gyrosensor. The integrated CD drive can be used to read in navigation data (digital map, voice data and software) and audio CDs.

If a wrong CD or a copied navigation CD is placed into the drive, it cannot be read. The message "Please insert Navi CD" is displayed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Position finding

The navigation processor continuously calculates the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following procedures:

GPS position finding

Basic position finding (dead reckoning)

Map-supported map matching

The correct position is determined by continuously comparing the location finding results of these three procedures.

Entry of the destination can be accomplished with menu guidance on the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) and is processed by the integral navigation processor. The system only allows entry of destinations stored on the CD.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following possibilities are available for destination entry:

Retrieval of destination stored in destination memory.

Menu guided free entry of destination using the name (if destination is stored on CD).

Route calculation

The route is calculated in the navigation processor of the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) after the destination has been entered or automatically after deviating from the suggested route.

The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor of the radio and navigation unit (A2/56). The following route calculations can be made in accordance with different models:

Fastest/shortest route

With/without highway

With/without toll

With/without ferry

Dynamic route calculation is possible taking current traffic situation into consideration (Traffic Message Channel (TMC) or telematics services)

Manual blocking of roads or stretches of road (traffic jam button)

Display of distance from destination and probable arrival time

Intermediate destination selectable

Detour can be selected (e.g. Munich to Hamburg via Stuttgart)

Route guidance

Navigation starts after the integral navigation processor has calculated the route. The driver is provided with continuous information in the form of route guidance symbols which appear on the display on the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) and by voice messages via the vehicle loudspeakers.

After the route data have been loaded, the navigation CD can be removed and an audio CD inserted. This system function allows Audio CDs to be played during navigation.
