General
The Traffic Sign Assist provides the driver with information or warns the driver of any adverse behavior through a message in the instrument cluster.
The multifunction camera detects and classifies traffic signs in front of the vehicle's direction of travel, and checks which the detected traffic signs are relevant for the vehicle or the driver.
The traffic signs detected on the multifunction camera are not taken into consideration by the Predictive Powertrain Control Unit for the speed control.
Traffic Sign Assist provides the driver with a visual warning in the following situations:
The vehicle is overtaking in a no-passing zone for trucks.
The vehicle is exceeding the permissible speed for trucks.
An acoustic and visual warning is issued when the system detects that the driver wishes to steer his vehicle onto the freeway opposite the direction of travel.
Function
Traffic Sign Assist is integrated into the multifunction camera.
Traffic Sign Assist can detect speed limits, no-passing zones and their cancellation, warning signs and truck-specific no-entry signs and display up to 2 traffic signs, including supplementary signs at the same time as the instrument cluster. If more than two traffic signs are relevant, only the two most important ones are shown to the driver.
Warnings on the instrument cluster:
Exceeding the speed limit, by highlighting the traffic sign symbol in the instrument cluster
Overtaking in a no-passing zone, by highlighting the traffic sign symbol in the instrument cluster
Driving in opposite direction to direction of travel, by visual warning in instrument cluster and warning tone
The traffic signs visually recorded by the multifunction camera are compared with the map data stored in the Predictive Powertrain Control Unit. The digital map also provides information about the applicable speed limits and the road type (country road, freeway, etc.).
All traffic sign graphics are stored in the instrument cluster control unit. All graphics are in accordance with the Vienna convention and are identical internationally.
Based on the information pertaining to locally-applicable truck speed limits, many speed-related signs can be ruled out as they are not relevant for trucks.
Traffic signs are not searched for on all objects that the multifunction camera recognizes as vehicles or pedestrians.
This ensures that traffic signs that are not relevant for the system such as, e.g. traffic signs stuck onto trucks are recognized.
System limits
There are situations in which traffic signs are concealed by other vehicles or objects. Where this happens, the system cannot then detect the traffic signs.
Traffic Sign Assist and individual functions are not available in every country (Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals).
Traffic Sign Assist cannot recognize signage indicating restricted access (height, width, weight, etc.).
