Remove/install crown wheel with differential

Removing

Secure vehicle against rolling

Remove rear axle shafts

Drain oil from rear axle



Rear axle - oil change

Detach cover from rear axle housing

 Take off gasket.

Remove oil guide plate

Remove tab washers (2)

Slacken counternut and turn pressure screw (3) back slightly

 On the side on which the ring gear mounting bolts are located.

Remove bearing cap (1).

 If the bearing caps are jammed, strike their side faces lightly with a plastic mallet.

Remove threaded rings (4) from axle housing

Undo jam nut and remove ring gear support bolt (5)

Lift ring gear together with differential out of axle housing

 Place match marks on the outer races and their tapered roller bearings.



Install

Push outer races onto tapered roller bearings

 Observe the identification of the outer races relative to the tapered roller bearings.

Insert ring gear together with differential into axle housing

Carefully insert threaded rings (4) and bearing caps (1)

Insert bolts into bearing caps (1) and tighten slightly

 Coat the thread beforehand with lead carbonate.

Adjust gear backlash at ring gear

Tighten pressure screw (3) and fix with counternut

Check contact pattern of ring gear or drive pinion

 If necessary, adjust gear backlash again or see: 

Correct the installed dimension of the drive pinion gear.

Install tab washers (2)

Install oil guide plate

Install ring gear support bolt (5)

 Screw in the ring gear support bolt (5) as far as the stop, unscrew 60° again and tighten jam nut.

Attach cover to rear axle housing

 Clean sealing surfaces, replace gasket.

Pour in oil at rear axle


