Gear tooth backlash on final-drive unit crownwheel - adjustment

1 Screw in both threaded rings (1) using square drift until a gear backlash of approx. 0.5 mm is reached.

When screwing in the threaded rings (1), strike the bearing caps (2) lightly with the plastic mallet so that the bearings lie flush.

2 Place the dial indicator holder (4) with dial indicator (3) on the axle housing and position the measuring tip under preload on a tooth flank of the ring gear.

3 Adjust the two threaded rings (1) uniformly to move the ring gear with differential towards the drive pinion gear until the specified value for the gear backlash is reached.

When adjusting the threaded rings (1), strike the bearing caps (2) lightly with the plastic mallet so that the tapered roller bearings are not placed under stress.

The gear backlash is measured by moving the ring gear to and fro with the drive pinion gear locked in position.

Check gear backlash at at least three positions offset by 120° relative to each other.

4 Detach the dial indicator (3) with dial indicator holder (4).

5 Tighten bearing caps (on side on which ring gear mounting bolts are located, 2) to specified value.

6 Screw the measurement stop (5) into the bearing caps.

The flag of the measurement stop must be parallel to the ring gear.

7 Position the dial indicator holder (4) with dial indicator (3) on the axle housing. Place the measuring tip perpendicularly and with preload on the flag of the measurement stop (5).

8 Set the dial indicator (3) to "0".

9 Tighten threaded ring (on ring gear side) using square drift (6) until dial indicator is deflected by 0.005 - 0.02 mm.

The pressure screw must not rest against the axle housing.

Aim for the lower limit in the case of run-in bearings and the upper limit in the case of new bearings.

10 Tighten bearing caps (on ring gear side), .

11 Turn ring gear. Preload must be within tolerance
(0.005 - 0.02 mm). Repeat adjustment if necessary.

12 Detach the measurement stop (5).

13 Check gear backlash again using dial indicator (3) and dial indicator holder (4); correct if necessary.
