Remove

1

Remove wheel hub

Front axle up to axle no. F 168310, wheel hub with tapered roller bearing

Unscrew nut fastening drag link on steering arm (2) and screw on again by hand

Only on driver's side.


Screw on the nut as far as the safety collar.
This prevents the thread of the ball joint on the drag link being damaged during removal.

 Counterhold the ball joint with an Allen wrench if necessary.

Pry drag link off steering arm (2)

Only on driver's side.

 The drag link springs off suddenly.

Unscrew nut and detach drag link from steering arm (2)

Only on driver's side.

Unscrew nut fastening tie rod on steering knuckle arm (16) and screw on again by hand


Screw on the nut as far as the safety collar.
This prevents the thread of the ball joint on the tie rod being damaged during removal.

 Counterhold the ball joint with an Allen wrench if necessary.

Pry tie rod off steering knuckle arm (16)

 The tie rod detaches suddenly.

Unscrew nut and detach tie rod from steering knuckle arm (16)

Remove steering arm (2)

Only on driver's side.

Remove steering knuckle arm (16)

Remove both retaining rings (7, 14)

Remove both caps (8, 13)

Remove kingpin (10)

 The upper needle bearings (6) are pressed out together with the kingpin (10).

Remove shim (20) and plain thrust bearing (19)

On driver side.

Remove radial shaft sealing ring (3) with washer (4)

Remove both needle bearings (15) at bottom of steering knuckle

 The steering knuckle bearing must be lubricated within one hour of installing the kingpin.
