Danger! | Life at risk by vehicle slipping or falling off the lift. | Position the vehicle on an appropriate lift so the front axle wheels, rear drive and driven axle wheels remain supported safely on the support plates of the elevator, at the lifting points determined by the vehicle manufacturer.
1 | Put the vehicle on a flat and level place | On a laden vehicle, take due preventive precaution before lifting.
2 | Detach the battery negative lead or turn-off the master switch | Loose the screw of the negative cable of the frame rail, avoiding to loose the battery terminals too.
3 | Detach the front shock absorbers on their bottom fastening | Excessive stroke damages the shock absorbers.
4 | Slightly lift the vehicle equally at both sides by the side rails, so that the stabilizer remains without load to permit removal of articulations | At this point, support the vehicle on stands placed safely, in order to permit stabilizer removal.
Danger! | Risk of injury by pinching and crushing when tilting the cab
5 | Tilt the cab to facilitate access | Only for 688.2 trucks.
6 | Control the front axle (2) height and remove the self-locking nuts (6), the articulation bolts (7) and the side arm plates (8)
7 | Remove the self-locking nuts (3.2), the clamps (3.1), and the bearing cap (3.3) and lift out the stabilizer bar (1) together with the mounts (4.3) | On the front axle stabilizer fastening.
8 | Remove the bearing mounts (3.4) from the stabilizer bar (1)
9 | Remove the molecular bushings (5) from the stabilizer bar (4) eyelets and from the brackets (13) on the top part | Do not remove or install the bushings by means of strikes. Use the appropriate device.
The device to be utilized is the same as for the removal and installation of the rear axle stabilizer, where its application is described in detail. See document beside.
| |||
| |||
| Check | ||
10 | Replacing: - Stabilizer bar, if deformed; - Self-locking nuts (6) of the articulation bolts; - Articulation bolts (7), if necessary; - Side arm plates (8), if necessary; - Center bearing mounts (3.4); - Clamps' self-locking nuts (3.2); - Clamps (3.1) and bearing caps (3.3), if necessary.
11 | Check the brackets (13, 14) on the side rail | Should it be necessary, replace them.
| |||
| Installing | ||
12 | Replace the molecular bushings (5) on the brackets (13) and on the eyelets (4) of the stabilizer bar (1) | Utilize the appropriate device for these removing and installing operations. The device, as it is the same, is described in the removal and installation of the rear axle stabilizer. See document beside.
| |||
| |||
13 | Install the stabilizer bar (1) and the new bearing mounts (3.4) in the assembling position | Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the inside of the mounts.
The mounts have a cut to permit the insertion of the bar.
14 | Assemble the stabilizer bar on the front axle (2) and install the bearing caps (3.3), the clamps (3.1), the bracket (3.5) and the self-locking nuts (3.2)
15 | Once the bearing clamps are tightened, move the stabilizer bar in the direction of rotation. | The bar must not remain locked by the bearings, it has to turn, even if with some difficulty.
16 | Install the side plates (8) with the articulation bolts (7) and the new self-locking nuts (6) | Should it be necessary, move the front axle to assist in the assembly.
| |||
17 | Fasten the shock absorbers on the respective brackets
Danger! | Life at risk by vehicle slipping or falling off the lift | Position the vehicle on an appropriate lift so the front axle wheels, rear drive and driven axle wheels remain supported safely on the support plates of the elevator, at the lifting points determined by the vehicle manufacturer.
18 | Lift the vehicle and remove the stands from under the side rails
20 | Do a test-drive to check vehicle behavior |
