| Remove and install | ||
The rear springs removal and installation jobs described here, are basic, some differences may exist according to type of vehicle and parabolic spring manufacturer, such as, springs with different quantities and shapes of leaves, clamps and brackets etc.
In the case of damaged leaves, the parabolic springs are to be replaced as complete units. The articulation bushings may be replaced when necessary. It is very important that the rear springs of a same axle be always replaced in pairs. Another point to be taken into consideration is the later re-tightening of the spring "U" bolts after the vehicle has been driven sometime in laden conditions. The re-tightening, whenever possible, will have to be carried out with the vehicle unladen.
1 | Put the vehicle on a flat and level place. Chock the front wheels to avoid the vehicle's unintentional rolling | On a laden vehicle, take due preventive precaution before lifting.
2 | Detach the battery negative lead or turn-off the master switch | Loose the screw of the negative cable of the frame rail, avoiding to loose the battery terminals too.
3 | Detach the rear shock absorbers on their bottom fastening | Excessive stroke damages the shock absorbers.
4 | Detach the side arms from the stabilizer
5 | Loosen the rear wheels without removing them
Danger! | Life at risk by vehicle slipping or falling off the lift | Position the vehicle on an appropriate lift so the front axle wheels, rear drive and driven axle wheels remain supported safely on the support plates of the elevator, at the lifting points determined by the vehicle manufacturer.
6 | Support the vehicle on stands placed safely under the side rails, on both sides, as to permit rear springs removal | It is not permissible to lift the vehicle only on one side with the opposite wheel remaining on the ground. The vehicle has to be lifted equally on both sides.
It is not permissible to lift the vehicle by the center of the rear axle, at the differential.
7 | Remove the rear wheels
8 | Slightly and carefully lift the rear axle until the spring articulations remain free | Chock the front axle with safety to remain in this position during removal and installation of the rear springs.
9 | Slightly loosen the nuts (17) of the spring “U” bolts (16) without detaching the spring
10 | On the front articulation, remove the self-locking nut (22.1) | Leave the articulation bolt (22) in place as a safety measure.
11 | On the rear articulation, remove the two bolts (23) and the two plates (24) from the shackle
12 | Remove the bolt (22) of the spring front articulation
13 | Remove the nuts (17) and the spring "U" bolts (16), the spring "U" bolt positioning piece (9), the bottom block (wedge) (10) and remove the spring | Observe that the wedge shaped bottom block (10) has an assembly position. Take precautions in order not to damage the king-bolt head, the respective fitting on the bottom block and the guide pin (11) and its respective fitting on the axle.
14 | Remove the guide pin (11)
15 | Should it be necessary to change the top bushings installed on the brackets fastened on the side rails, utilize the same procedure of the spring eyelet bushings
16 | Should it be necessary, remove the front brackets (26) or rear brackets (25) fastened on the side rails
| Check | ||
17 | Confirm the clean state of the king-bolt (7) fitting bore, of the spring seating surface (5), of the bottom block (wedge, observe the position), the spring guide pin (11) on the vehicle front axle (12) | Replacing: If necessary, replace the self-locking flange nuts or other components presenting wear.
18 | Examine the spring "U" bolts and the nuts | Replacing: The spring "U" bolts, nuts and stops, if necessary.
| Installing | ||
19 | Replace the spring articulation bushings and install them also on the rear brackets (25)
If the brackets (25) and (26) have been removed, fasten them on the side rails | Observe that original flange bolts and nuts be utilized and of the required quality. Apply the respective tightening torque.
| |||
21 | Assemble in the sequence: The guide pin (11), the bottom block (10) and check its correct position, fit the spring carefully
22 | On the top part, install the spring top shim (6), the "U" bolts positioning piece (9). Apply a thin layer of grease on the “U” bolts thread (16) and install them on the spring with the nuts (17). Tighten normally on both sides. However, the final tightening (before the later re-tightening) will be applied later with the vehicle on the ground
| |||
23 | Control the axle height and install the shackle plates (24) and the bolts (23) at the rear. At front, install the bolts (22) and the nuts (22.1) | Observe the bolt position on the articulations.
Rear articulations bolt nuts.
Front articulations bolt nuts.
24 | Install the rear stabilizer
25 | Install the rear shock absorbers
26 | Install the wheels | ||
27 | Lower the vehicle to the ground and re-tighten the wheels | Re-tighten the wheels later-on after having driven 1,500 km.
28 | With the vehicle on the ground on the wheels re-tighten the spring "U" bolts
29 | Take the vehicle for a test-drive, preferably on irregular terrain | Check the vehicle behavior.
Carry out a later re-tightening, after the vehicle has been driven in laden condition. |
