| Remove and install | ||
Considering that the shock absorbers have fundamental importance in the vehicle behavior, the maintenance and replacement of the shock absorbers must be carried out always per axle, i.e., on both sides of the vehicle, right and left.
1 | Put the vehicle on a flat and level place where it is possible to work safely | Chock the vehicle front wheels to avoid its unintentional displacement. More precautions are to be observed to lift a laden vehicle.
2 | Detach the battery negative lead or turn-off the master switch. | Disconnect the battery negative lead detaching its end fastened to the chassis frame. Avoid detaching the negative lead end fastened to the battery's post.
3 | Remove the nut (9) and the bolt (6) fastening the rear shock absorbers to the bottom brackets (4), right and left side respectively | To remove and install the rear shock absorbers, the vehicle must be raised and supported by the side rails so the rear axle can be moved as needed according to the jobs. The shock absorbers must be detached at the bottom fastening to prevent their normal stroke being exceeded and damaged when the vehicle is supported by the side rails.
Installing: Fasten the shock absorbers on the bottom brackets (4) with the bolts (6) and the new self-locking nuts (9) and, tighten the nuts to the specified torque.
| |||
Danger! | Observe the necessary precautions when lifting the vehicle | Risk of serious accidents!
Do not lift the vehicle by the center of the axles.
4 | Lift the vehicle supporting it on stands conveniently positioned under the side rail. | The vehicle must not be lifted only on one side. Lift the vehicle equally on both sides.
5 | Remove the self-locking nut (9) and the fastening bolt (5) of the shock absorbers on the chassis cross member and, remove the shock absorbers | Installing: Fasten the shock absorbers on the chassis cross member utilizing new self-locking nuts (9) and tighten the nuts to the specified torque.
| |||
6 | Remove the mount (7) with the bushing (8) of the adapter (eyelet) of the shock absorbers | Replace the mounts (7) with the metal bushings (8).
Installing: To install the mounts (7) and the bushings (8), apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly and utilize a shop press.
| Check | ||
7 | Check the shock absorbers for condition | Replace the shock absorbers showing: Traces of leaks Worn rod Dented tube Loose or deformed eyelets
Damaged mounts Operating faults proven on the vehicle or on appropriate testing equipment.
6 | Install in reverse order
7 | Do a test-drive to check the vehicle behavior |
