| Remove/install | ||
1 | Remove camshafts (77 and 78)
2 | Remove spark plugs (22)
3 | Remove engine wiring harness cover (21) on assembly partition wall
4 | Bolt on support bridge (02) with slide (7) | Bolt support bridge (02) onto camshaft bearings 1+5 and 6+10; use collar bolts (1) for camshaft bearing caps to do this.
| |||
| |||
5 | Rotate piston on the cylinder to be worked on to TDC | Turn crankshaft at the central screw on the vibration damper (62) while holding up the timing chain (73) so that it is does not jam while turning. Installation: Before installing the camshaft turn back the crankshaft again into the starting position. Only then can the color codings on the timing chain (1) be used to adjust the timings.
6 | Remove hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements (3) (bucket tappets) | on the cylinder
7 | Install retaining lock for crankshaft/ring gear | After setting TDC of cylinder to be processed, in order to prevent crankshaft or piston turning further.
8 | Connect cylinder leakage testing unit | Screw connection hose (4) of the cylinder leakage tester into the relevant spark plug bore.
9 | Pressurize the compression chamber | Pressurize to a pressure of about 5 bar.
10 | Attach lever compression tool (09) with thrust piece (05) into collapsible section (7) and align
Position thrust piece (05) vertically at valve spring retainer (15) and align parallel to slide (7). Fix thrust piece (05) in place with screw (8) to prevent it turning.
11 | Remove upper valve spring retainer (15) and valve spring (17) | Compress valve spring (17). Do not allow valves to come into contact with piston crowns, otherwise they will be bent. Remove valve keeper (14) using tweezers (6); remove magnetic pin or magnetic finger.

Tweezers | |||
The valve springs (17) of the inlet valves and exhaust valves are identical.
12 | Replace valve stem seals | Inspect surface of valve stems for roughness and formation of burrs (visual inspection or check with nail). Replace valves with a rough stem surface or formation of burrs:
Remove valves | |||
13 | Remove lower valve spring retainer (20)
| Checking | ||
14 | Inspect upper and lower valve spring retainers (15 and 20) | Inspect valve spring retainer for formation of burrs; replace if necessary.
15 | Install in the reverse order |
