Caution | Risk of injury caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts | Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.
Caution | Risk of injury to skin and eyes due to handling of engine oil. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing engine oil | Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
Topical note | Notes on avoiding damage through contamination and foreign objects
| Remove | ||
1 | Check basic position of the camshafts (1).
Re-position timing chain (14).
If markings (8) on the camshafts (1) or top dead center (TDC) marking (arrow) on the belt pulley (7) do not match with the rib on the timing case cover (6),
| |||
Adjust basic position of camshafts(1).
Remove/install camshafts of right cylinder bank
Remove/install camshafts of left cylinder bank
2 | Turn engine at belt pulley (7).
Until the screw (11) is accessible.
When the ignition TDC position is at cylinder 1, the screw (11) is the bottom screw.
Socket wrench bit | |||
3 | Remove screw/bolt (11). | Screw, camshaft retainer holder to cylinder head
4 | Turn engine at belt pulley (7).
Until the markings (8) on the camshafts (1) match.
Socket wrench bit | |||
If the markings (3), viewed from the direction of travel, are not flush on the left side to the top edge of the respective cylinder head,
| |||
turn engine at belt pulley (7) again.
If TDC marking (arrow) on the belt pulley (7) is not flush with the rib of the timing case cover (6),
| |||
turn engine at belt pulley (7) again.
5 | Mark timing chain (14) relative to the camshaft sprockets (4, 5).
6 | Fix timing chain (14) to the camshaft sprockets (4, 5) using cable ties. | If the camshaft sprockets (4, 5) are released from the camshafts (1) and are not removed.
7 | Remove chain tensioner (2).
8 | Remove bolts (12). | To ensure the basic position of the camshafts (1), the engine must not be turned during removal of the screws (12).
Screw/bolt, camshaft sprocket to camshaft
9 | Remove camshaft sprockets (4, 5) from the camshafts (1).
10 | Remove camshaft sprockets (4, 5). | To do this, remove camshaft sprockets (4, 5) from timing chain (14).
Attach a cable tie to the timing chain (14) on each cylinder head and then lower timing chain (14) with cable ties in the timing chain chamber.
| Install | ||
11 | Install camshaft sprockets (4, 5). | Observe markings on the timing chain (14) relative to the camshaft sprockets (4, 5).
To do this, lift timing chain (14) with the cable ties from the timing chain chambers, attach camshaft sprockets (4, 5) to the timing chain (14), and then remove the cable ties.
12 | Attach camshaft sprockets (4, 5) to the camshafts (1).
13 | Screw in the screws (12). | Screw/bolt, camshaft sprocket to camshaft
14 | Install chain tensioner (2).
15 | Release timing chain (14) from the camshaft sprockets (4, 5). | If the camshaft sprockets (4, 5) were released from the camshafts (1) and were not removed.
To do so, cut through the cable ties.
16 | Turn engine at belt pulley (7).
Until the thread for the screw (11) is accessible.
Socket wrench bit | |||
17 | Screw in screw (11). | Screw/bolt, camshaft sprocket to camshaft
18 | Check basic position of the camshafts (1).
If the markings (8) on the camshafts (1) or TDC marking (arrow) on the belt pulley (7) do not match with the rib on the timing case cover (6),
| |||
Adjust basic position of camshafts(1).
