| Remove/install | ||
| External torx set | ||
1 | Remove engine compartment panels
2 | Drain/collect engine oil
3 | Remove viscous fan (1) | Right-hand thread!
4 | Remove fan shroud (2) | - On vehicles fitted with suction fan, first disconnect plug connection for suction fan.
5 | Remove engine trim panel
6 | Remove resonance tube (13) with resonance unit (14) | - Disconnect connector for hot film mass air flow sensor (HFM) for this Operation step and unscrew resonance pipe at cylinder head cover.
The resonance pipe is attached at the rear at intake manifold with a plastic plate.
Do not damage plastic bracket.
7 | Remove oil pan bottom section (3) | Installation: Sealant flow at bottom part of oil pan
Loctite 5970 sealant | |||
| |||
8 | Disconnect electric cable at oil level sensor (B40)
9 | Remove oil pipe (4) from dipstick | Unscrew one screw/bolt on cylinder head cover! Installation: Install new sealing ring!
| |||
10 | Take off front wheels
11 | Remove exhaust (9) | ||
12 | Remove front drive shafts (5) | Detach front drive shafts from front drive gear for this operation step!
Do not damage seals of drive shafts!
13 | Remove intermediate shaft (6) | Remove circlip on outside at bearing!
14 | Remove front axle gear (7).
15 | Unscrew screw/bolts (8) of front engine mounts (12) at front axle carrier (16)
16 | Put on engine carrier arm
17 | Raise engine | Ensure that engine and attached parts do not touch the body! Do not over-tension coolant lines!
18 | Prop front axle carrier (16) with inspection pit or assembly lift
19 | Unscrew steering joint screw/bolt (10) | Installation: Replace nut and bolt.
| |||
20 | unscrew bracket (17) for oil line (18) at front axle carrier (16)
21 | Unscrew screw/bolts (15) at front axle carrier (16) | The screw/bolts (15) are self-tapping; pay attention to the following procedure: Never re-tap thread in longitudinal member. Replace Screw/bolts. Use only original screw/bolts (4 x). Do not position screw/bolts at an angle when screwing in. Do not use an impact wrench. Observe tightening torque.
| |||
22 | Lower front axle carrier (16) | Installation: Contact surfaces of front axle carrier to longitudinal member must be cleaned and flat. Insert locating pins (arrows) at front axle carrier into the holes in the longitudinal member when fitting on.
23 | Remove oil pan top section(11) | Take out oil pan to the front in direction of travel for this operation step; rotate crankshaft slightly, if necessary. Push the ATF lines at the automatic transmission slightly to the side.
Installation: - Pay attention to different lengths and diameters of screw/bolts!

Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
25 | Check for leaks with engine running
26 | Read out fault memory and erase | Stored faults which can result from cables being disconnected or from simulation during removal and installation or test work, have to be processed and erased in the fault memories after completing the work.
