Danger | Risk of explosion caused by fuel igniting. Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by fuel spraying out at high pressure | Keep all ignition sources out of hazard area.
Warning | Risk of injury. Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. | Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary.
Warning | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
Topical note | Notes on avoiding damage through contamination and foreign objects
| Remove/install | ||
1 | Warm up engine to normal operating temperature and switch off engine.
2 | Remove glow plugs. | ||
Installation: Only install upper engine cover after the leak test.
3 | Crank engine with starter
Crank engine several times to eliminate combustion residues in the cylinder.
4 | Attach screw-in piece(3) with the check valve installed into the glow plug hole for the cylinder to be checked. | Screw-in fitting
5 | Attach flexible adapter(2) to compression pressure recorder(1). | Compression tester
6 | Connect compression pressure recorder(1) with flexible adapter(2) to screw-in piece(3). | Compression tester
Screw-in fitting | |||
| Check | ||
7 | Crank the engine with the starter and check the compression pressure.
Turn engine with starter at least 8 revolutions.
8 | Perform check process in cylinder order on remaining cylinders in same manner.
9 | Compare measured pressure values with specified test values. | Installation tolerance or new value of compression pressure
Wear limit or limit value of compression pressure
Compression pressure, permissible difference between the cylinders
If compression pressure lies outside the tolerance range
| |||
Check for cylinder leakage.
10 | Install in the reverse order.
11 | Check function and leak tightness of the engine with the engine running.
12 | Install upper engine cover. |
