Danger! | Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant. | Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage bottles. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and eye protection.
| Notes on coolant | All engines | |
1 | Open rear lid | ||
2 | Disconnect the electrical connector (7) of the auxiliary heater circulation pump (6) | To avoid damaging the auxiliary heater circulation pump (6), ensure that it does not run dry.
3 | Switch on ignition | ||
4 | Adjust the temperature selector of vehicle heating to maximum heat output | See Operating Instructions
5 | Open the right rear maintenance flap (5) of the vehicle
6 | Unscrew the cap (1) of the coolant expansion reservoir (2)
7 | Remove engine compartment paneling
| Remove/install bottom engine compartment paneling | ||
8 | Inspect the condition of the cooling and heating system, and check for leaks
| |||
9 | Open the drain valve (3) and drain the coolant | If there is no drain valve (3), unscrew the drain plugs (4) at the radiator. Old coolant and corrosion residues must be completely flashed out. If the cooling system is very dirty, clean it against a separate repair order.
10 | Close the drain valve (3) | Alternatively, tighten drain plugs (4) at the radiator.
11 | Fill coolant up to the maximum fill level (arrow) | To prevent damage, use coolant in the prescribed composition only.
| |||
| |||
12 | Switch off ignition | ||
13 | Connect the electrical connector (7) of the auxiliary heater circulation pump (6)
Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns when working in engine during starting procedure | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving.
14 | Start engine and run for about 1 minute at varying speeds
15 | Switch off engine and top up coolant
16 | Screw on the cap (1) of the coolant expansion reservoir (2)
17 | Close the right rear maintenance flap (5) of the vehicle
18 | Close tailgate | ||
19 | Crank the engine and run until the coolant has reached operating temperature
20 | Switch off engine and allow to cool down
| Check | ||
21 | Check coolant level, adjust to correct level if necessary. | At a coolant temperature of about
22 | Inspect cooling system for leaks
23 | Install lower engine compartment paneling.
| Remove/install bottom engine compartment paneling |
