Manual transmission main shifter shaft position sensor

Overview

This document contains information on:

General

Location

Function

General

The manual transmission gearshift shaft position sensor records the neutral position and the engaged reverse gear on the manual transmission. The position is recorded through the main shifter shaft. Recording the neutral position is  also necessary for the ECO start/stop function.

Location

The manual transmission gearshift shaft position sensor to located at the side on the transmission housing above the starter.

Function

The position sensor is designed so that it can detect the position of the permanent magnet through the transmission housing.

Use of the manual transmission main shifter shaft position sensor means that reverse gear detection using a backup light switch is no longer necessary.

The neutral position of the manual transmission is measured using a PLCD position sensor (Permanent magnet Linear Contactless Displacement sensor) and a permanent magnet which is located on a central main shifter shaft. The sensor electronics based on the magnetic induction operating principle mainly consists of the following component parts:

Core, consisting of magnetically soft material

Primary coil

Two evaluation coils

The sensor electronics are located inside the sensor housing.

The sensor electronics generate two redundant voltage signals. The redundant voltage signals are linearly dependent on the position of the permanent magnet to the core of the sensor. The analog voltage signals applied to the evaluation coils are recorded and evaluated by the combustion engine control unit.

The position of the main shifter shaft (3) (neutral position and engaged reverse gear) is determined by the manual transmission main shifter shaft position sensor (1) contactlessly by means of the permanent magnet (2). The permanent magnet (2) is positively attached to the main shifter shaft (3), level with the manual transmission main shifter shaft position sensor (1).

The manual transmission main shifter shaft position sensor is mounted on the outside of the transmission housing and detects the vertical and rotary movements of the main shifter shaft (3).
