Risk of injury caused by touching hot retarder and by scalding from hot retarderoil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure

Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder.

Drain oil from retarder and determine oil filling capacity



Remove coolant temperature sensor

Remove coolant hoses

Unscrew holder of coolant pipes and tie coolant lines to one side.

Remove heat exchanger (1) and remove O-rings (4, 5)

 Support heat exchanger.

Check heat exchanger

Install

Insert new O-rings (4, 5) into bores

 Lightly grease new O-rings.

Attach heat exchanger (1) to oil container (2)

 Bolt, heat exchanger to oil reservoir

Install coolant temperature sensor

Attach coolant hoses

Fill retarder oil



 Warning

Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Let engine warm-up at moderate rpm up to a coolant temperature of approx. 80 °C and keep at this coolant temperature for approx. 5 minutes

 The cooler can be covered if necessary.

Flush retarder system



Retarder - oil change

Only there is coolant in the retarder oil.



Via several light brake applications, flush retarder system; then drain oil and refill retarder again.


Repeat process 2 to 3 times.
