Mark relative positions of bearing cover (2) and axle housing. Damage may occur if the bearing caps (2) are mixed up. | |||

9 | Remove crown wheel with differential (6) | Mark relative positions of outer races (4 and 7) and tapered roller bearings. Damage may occur if the outer races (4 and 7) are mixed up. | |
10 | Remove outer races (4 and 7) | ||

11 | Install crown wheel with differential (6) and outer races (4 and 7) in axle housing | If tapered roller bearings are run-in, observe markings on outer races (4 and 7). Damage may occur if the outer races (4 and 7) are mixed up. | |
12 | Install threaded rings (3 and 11) | Oil threaded rings (3 and 11), positive-lock into thread in axle housing and turn until they lie flat against the outer races (4 and 7). | |
13 | Install dog clutch (1) | On vehicles with differential lock. | |
14 | Install bearing cap (2) | Fit bearing cover (2) according to markings, drive against axle housing using a rubber mallet and tighten bolts so that the threaded rings (3 and 11) can still be turned easily. | |
15 | Screw in threaded rings (3 and 11) until the tapered roller bearings spin without play | Square drift | |
16 | Adjust gear backlash of crown wheel and preload of tapered roller bearings | ||

18 | Install setscrew (13) and sliding block (14). | Stick sliding block (14) with the aid of some grease onto the ring gear. Turn ring gear so that the bore of the sliding block lines up with the adjustment screw bore. | |
19 | Adjust setscrew (13) | Screw setscrew (13) with sliding block (14) as far as possible into crown wheel, turn back 1/8 of a turn and counter with lock nut (12). | |
