1 Spin ring gear (3) several times.
2 Fit dial indicator holder (1) and dial indicator (2) onto axle housing.
3 Align tip of dial indicator as vertically as possible with preload up against the contact face of one of the crown wheel teeth.
4 Block drive pinion and measure backlash by spinning the ring gear (3) back and forth.
5 Adjust gear backlash by turning the threaded rings using square drift.
6 Measure gear backlash on at least three points set 120° apart on the ring gear (3).
W33.30-1017-01
7 Tighten bearing cover on ring gear side (4) to specified tightening torque.
The support bolt of the bearing cover and the sliding block must not touch the axle housing or crown wheel.
W33.30-1018-01
8 Bolt measurement stop onto bearing cover on ring gear side so that the marker is parallel with the ring gear.
9 Fit dial indicator holder (1) with dial indicator (2) onto axle housing (6) and align dial indicator tip with preload vertically to marker (arrow).
10 Set dial indicator (2) to zero.
11 Tighten the opposite threaded ring (5) using square drift until the dial indicator (2) deflects to the specified setting (before tightening the bearing covers).
W33.30-1019-01
While adjusting, the crown wheel (3) must be spun continuously at least three times. When doing so, tap the bearing cover (7) and both sides of the crown wheel a few times with a rubber mallet (to settle and align the tapered roller bearing).
12 Tighten opposite bearing cover (7) to specified tightening torque . The preload should now indicate the specified setting (after tightening the bearing cover).
Set the lower limit for run-in bearings; the upper limit for new bearings.
W33.30-1016-01
13 Turn support bolt (8) against the axle housing until the preload reaches the specified setting (final measurement). Tighten jam nut (9).
14 Spin ring gear (3) several times, check gear backlash and correct if necessary.
