Remove

Remove bell hub with outer planet carrier

Release slotted nut (18) and unscrew

Remove lock washer (17) and unscrew slotted nut (16)

Remove planetary hub gear (15) together with carrier (14)

Remove retaining ring (13) from planetary hub gear (15)

Remove carrier (14) from planetary hub gear (15)

Pull off wheel hub (9) together with tapered roller bearing (12) using a commercially available puller


The puller must be supported on the axle spindle (1) using the  thrust piece.
Supporting the puller directly on the drive shaft can damage the universal joint of the drive shaft.

Remove tapered roller bearing (12) from wheel hub (9)

Remove radial shaft sealing rings (5, 6) from wheel hub (9)

Remove outer races (8, 11) from wheel hub (9)

Only if the tapered roller bearings (7, 12) or the wheel hubs (9) are replaced.

Remove ABS measuring ring (9.2)

Only if wheel hub (9) is to be replaced.

Pull tapered roller bearing (7) off axle spindle (1) using a commercially available puller


The puller must be supported on the axle spindle (1) using the  thrust piece.
Supporting the puller directly on the drive shaft can damage the universal joint of the drive shaft.

Release thrust ring (2) using a chisel and remove from axle spindle (1)

Remove damaged wheel studs (10) from wheel hub (9)

Only if old wheel hub (9) is to be reinstalled.



Install

15.1

Attach new wheel studs (10) to wheel hub (9) in place of removed wheel studs (10)

If damaged wheel studs (10) have been removed and old wheel hub (9) is to be reinstalled.

15.2

Attach new wheel studs (10) to new wheel hub (9)

If a new wheel hub (9) is to be installed.

Clean contact surface of thrust ring (2) on axle spindle (1) until free of grease

Heat up new thrust ring (2) to approx. 80 °C and install until it lies against axle spindle (1)

 Apply pressure to thrust ring (2) until it has cooled down sufficiently to ensure that its installation position no longer changes.

Clean axle spindle (1)

Heat up inner race of tapered roller bearing (7) to approx. 80 °C and install tapered roller bearing (7) until it lies against axle spindle (1)

Thoroughly clean wheel hub (9) in area of outer races (8, 11)

Only if outer races (8, 11) were removed.

Warm up wheel hub (9) in the area of outer race (11) to approx. 80 °C and install outer race (11) into wheel hub (9) all the way

Warm up wheel hub (9) in the area of outer race (8) to approx. 80 °C and install outer race (8) into wheel hub (9) all the way

Install radial shaft sealing ring (6) into wheel hub (9) all the way

Attach ABS measuring ring (9.2) to wheel hub (9)

Only if wheel hub (9) was replaced.

Insert tapered roller bearing (12) into wheel hub (9) and mount wheel hub (9) onto axle spindle (1) all the way

Insert carrier (14) into planetary hub gear (15) and secure using retaining ring (13)

Slide carrier (14) with planetary hub gear (15) onto axle spindle (1)

Tighten inner slotted nut (16)

 When tightening, continuously turn the wheel hub (9) while at the same time striking the wheel hub (9) a few times with a rubber hammer in a diagonal pattern so that the tapered roller bearings (7, 12) come into contact with zero clearance.

Loosen inner slotted nut (16) again by approx. 1/4 turn

 This sets the wheel bearing play.

Oil locking plate (17) lightly and install on axle spindle (1)

 The locking pin of the lock washer (17) must point outward.

Tighten outer slotted nut (18)

 Outer and inner slotted nut on steering knuckle

Position dial indicator holder (19) with dial indicator (20) and extension (21) on wheel hub (9) such that tip of extension (21) lies against axle spindle (1) with preload

Set scale of dial indicator (20) to 0

Move wheel hub (9) on axle spindle (1) backward and forward and check wheel bearing play when doing so

Detach outer slotted nut (18), remove lock washer (17), loosen inner slotted nut (16) and perform all work starting with operation step 31.

Drive lock washer (17) into suitable grooves of outer slotted nuts (18) and inner slotted nut (16)

Install bell hub with outer planet carrier
