Remove oil filter element (5)

 Engine oil in the oil filter runs into the oil pan.

Remove bolts on the oil pan (4) in the area of the timing case cover; loosen all the other bolts without removing

 The oil pan can be lowered a little
 Do not damage oil pan gasket when removing the timing case cover. 

Remove poly-V belt tensioning device (6)

Remove coolant pump (7)

Remove alternator carrier (3)

Remove supporting strut (16); lay to one side with connector

Remove bracket (19)

Bracket (17) and (18) remove

with air conditioning (code H06)

Remove power steering pump (13) with lines connected and place to one side

Remove oil-water heat exchanger (14)

Position crankshaft to a 20° crank angle after ignition TDC of cylinder 1 (arrow)

Rotate engine at crankshaft.

Lock camshafts using the retaining pin (12)

Mark camshaft sprockets (10) and (11) relative to timing chain with color coding (arrows)

 Installation: Place timing chain in such a way that the color codings on the timing chain and on the camshaft sprockets lie one above the other (arrows)

Remove chain tensioner (9)

 Installation: Disassemble chain tensioner and assemble together again as described

Remove intake and exhaust camshaft sprocket (10) and (11)

 Installation: Replace camshaft sprocket bolts; only use once



Remove slide rail pins (21)

 Installation: Coat top slide rail pin (21) with sealant and knock into the cylinder head as far as the stop.

Unscrew bolts (20) on cylinder head from timing case cover



Remove belt pulley/vibration damper (22)

Remove bolts (30) and (31) on timing case cover



Take off timing case cover (28)

 Do not damage cylinder head gasket (arrows) and oil pan seal. 

Replace cylinder head gasket or oil pan seal if necessary.

 Installation: Pull timing chain firmly upwards when installing the timing-case cover (28) to ensure that no chain loops are formed between the crankshaft gear and the chain locking journals to the timing-case cover (28).

Replace front crankshaft radial seal (33)

Clean sealing surfaces at timing case cover (28) and at crankcase

 Installation: Coat sealing surfaces with sealant. Ensure that no sealant finds its way into the oil reservoir (29) for the chain tensioner.

 Replace sealing rings (27).
