Cap of radiator or expansion reservoir

turn anti-clockwise as far as detent 1 to release pressure.

Do not open the cap unless the coolant temperature is below 90 °C.

Risk of scalding!

Cap

turn further until detent 2 and remove.

Note

Coolant composition, antifreeze protection down to - 37 °C

50 % by vol. water (Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Service Products).

50 % by vol. anticorrosion/antifreeze agent (Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Service Products).

A higher concentration is only required at lower outside temperatures.

A concentration of 55 % by vol. anticorrosion/
antifreeze agent offers anticorrosion protection down to about - 45 °C.

A concentration of more than 55 % by vol. anticorrosion/antifreeze agent reduces the antifreeze protection and impairs the heat dissipation.

Disposing of coolants

The anticorrosion/antifreeze agents approved in the Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Service Products are biodegradable substances.

Observe legal requirements and local wastewater regulations.

Refer to the Environmental Protection Catalog issued by MBVD/PWU for workshops located in Germany.

Operational monitoring of coolant

Check the antifreeze properties of the coolant before the start of the cold season of the year.

Check the concentration of anticorrosion/
antifreeze agent once a year in countries with hight outside temperatures.

The corrosion protection in the coolant is reduced during engine operation. Such coolants have a severely corrosive effect.

The maximum permissible period of use for the specified coolant in car engines is 3 years.

When topping up the coolant (after loss of coolant) ensure that the concentration of anticorrosion/antifreeze agent in the coolant is 50 % by vol. (antifreeze protection down to
- 37 °C).

Before pouring in fresh coolant, the cooling and heating system should be free of used coolant and corrosion residues. Clean the cooling and heating system for this purpose.

Anticorrosion/antifreeze agent

Anticorrosion/antifreeze agent performs the following tasks:

ensuring adequate corrosion and cavitation protection for all components,

protecting against freezing (antifreeze protection),

increasing the boiling point.

Use only approved anticorrosion/antifreeze agents (see Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Service Products).

Water

Use water which is clean and not too hard. Drinking water frequently, but not always, satisfies the requirements. The content of dissolved substances in the water can be of importance for the occurrence of corrosion. If the quality of the water is not known, use distilled or fully desalinated water. Refer to the Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Service Products for the quality of water.
